Stumbled upon this article and thought it might be of interest to those of you that own a PS4 Controller:

The article opens with....

Playing games on Steam with a PS4 controller is remarkably easy: Just plug the controller into your PC, and you're good to go.

Not entirely true. The DS4 will not work on a PC without some form of 3rd party software. Without 3rd party software Windows doesn't recognise the controller. I use DS4Windows.exe

Can then use the DS4 wirelessly by enabling Bluetooth on the computer, or by connecting wired using a USB cable connecting DS4 and computer. Controller then works for standalone games, games running in Steam and games running in XBOX Live.

The DS4 does work wired with Steam with no 3rd party drivers whatsoever.
The DS3 does also now actually, after installing PSNow so Steam can use its driver

I use them both this way myself

Corrected above - PS3 controller did require initial install of PSNow to pull that official driver in.

Interesting that B.

Never did for me in Steam (tried with Hand of Fate in the past), would never be recognised by the laptop, hence the need for DS4Windows.exe

How long ago did you try it?

Also, I was wrong about PS3.
I forgot about initial PSNow install so steam could pull that driver in.

Considering I bought the game back in 2015 it would have been 2016 more than likely. Recently played it again back in Oct'18.

Was same with Ori and the Blind Forest (in Steam library). Game had controller support but I could never get the game to recognise the controller until I installed DS4Windows.

As I also had some non-Steam games on my laptop the DS4 wouldn't get noticed by the laptop, so that was when I loaded DS4Windows, which always loads on boot-up, so even when using Steam I would always have DS4Windows running to handle the DS4 so would never have been aware about Steam being able to pick it up, lol.
