Anyone have a trick to filling up the light between the trees without planting hundreds of trees? In the first pic you can see lots of light between the trees, but I'd like it to be dark between the trees like in real life.

I would use some of those 2 plane trees to fill in, but behind another row of real trees or bushes or trees sunken down to look like bushes...

90% of the time I use 2-plane trees, but sometimes I use a cube to make a wall and then apply a deceiving texture to it.  It depends on where the player will be looking and the view distance.

With respect to FPS you can place a large number of 2 plane trees, but you can slow things down a tad if not set up correctly.

Okay, I did consider the 2 plane trees, but I didn't think about shrinking trees. Thanks

Sounds good, didn't think about making a cube for some situations.  The colors in your course look great...looks like October!  :D

If you create a prefab of your speed tree the. Give it very aggressive LOD it will be low quality fast and the billboard rotates to the golfers view. You can get very dense if you make a separate prefab and make it get out of LOD really quickly. You can also delete the collider if you really wanted to make it slightly less of a performance hit. I like it more than the 2 plane trees because then the tree will match the other trees you are planting.

Okay, sounds like I need to do a little more homework, but will definitely check into this. BTW...Paiute looks awesome! It's my new favorite desert course.  :)

Thanks!  The other thing I have not check that we learned from DP the casting  shadows for grass is a big performance hit.  I wonder if filler trees would benefit from turning off casting shadows.  I have not looking into it at all yet but it could be another way to help out the performance.

I wouldn't be surprised...I've heard that shadows can be a big FPS killer...

This seems to work okay...I just sunk a few full size trees down to the limbs behind the regular trees, (sort of like giant bushes) that seems to block the empty space, and look natural.

Thanks Doctor...I'm having a lot of fun with this CF thing!.  I just wish I had half the talent you and some of these other guys have. Luckily, I get lots of help here and on youtube to point me in the right direction.  :P

Thats the way to do it. I never ever have used 2d trees on my courses, some do, I just don't like them, even as fillers.

You could also just shorten the height of a tree and plant them that way. Dragging them in 1 at a time can be a pain.

I agree though, you've got the look now.

Welcome aboard.

Peace

Check out the shared objects thread.  Some good filler trees have been made available by the community.
