I apologize if this has been asked before. What files need to be copied to make a backup of the course.  Do I need to copy the entire folder in Documents or just specific files?  I am trying to install the EasyRoads3D asset and it needs to update the scripts and asks if I have updated. Not wanting to lose a bunch of work if something goes wrong, I would like to make a backup copy of my course.  If I copy the entire folder, its over 1GB. So I am hoping there is a better solution.

Thanks for the help.

Tim, 1MB isn't very big. Is this a typo and you meant 1GB?

Saved Unity Projects go to the Documents Folder

which is away from Unity proper.  Not sure if this

is what you mean.

Yep. Meant 1GB. Those keys aren't even close ;)

I have been copying the entire course folder from within the Documents folder to back up the course. Do I need to do that, or can I just backup the Unity course file?  Hope that better explains it.

I don't want to steer you in the wrong direction Tim, but I would

(ass)ume that saving projects to the Documents folder would be enough.

It's a good idea to have another copy on an external drive in case

of a total PC catastrophe.

And less than 2 quid a month for 100GB. You just can't beat that.

I have been copying the entire course folder in Documents to an SD card to back up.  Do I have to copy all the files in the course folder. Assets, Library, and all the other folders and files. This is over a GB for a small par 3 course. Or can I just copy specific files that could be later used to reload if something goes wrong.  Sorry to keep misunderstand and probably more so, poorly explain.

I personally save the entire project folder, but I have plenty of storage. You need to save at least everything that is being used in your project. Try saving what you think you need and then try opening the saved project and see what happens, then go from there. just a thought.

As far as I know I think you only need to backup a few things in the asset folder like the New Terrain.asset and probably New Terrain.asset.meta, I assume you are talking about Hyland Greens so backup that unity file and the unity.meta file. You might need the course overhead as well. I think that might be it.

BUT.....   I would not do anything yet till you read this as you need to do some things because Easyroads is not unity 5 compatible yet but he does have a beta in there that probably works but I have not tried it yet. I got many of errors when doing that script thing but that is because Easyroads is made for Unity 4.6 or lower. Must be a Unity thing, obviously the people who built Unity aren't very smart since everybody has to keep updating their software and apps. I don't see this happening in UE4 and that's what makes UE4 more advanced than Unity3D.

I need to read the forums and see if my pay for another PRO version of Easyroads once he updated it to Unity 5. I WON'T!!

It's wiser to continue as you are Tim..... knowing what you did several days ago regarding using partial backups of files, isn't the best way forward. You could argue you backup the scene file and the Library and Project Settings folder - and only backup the Asset folder once, after all the objects and textures are planted. But i think you'll never stop tinkering and remembering where you are by date or memory will eventually catch you out.

Who knows though, maybe there is a simpler way but I never found it either.

Maybe a Compare Folder Util is out there, to help examine what files have changed and simply track those that are updated. Easy ways are best though... dump it all into a folder with todays date. Remove the oldest backup you have and continue. Personally, I only keep particular backups... those of significant change, signposts etc. They remain for as long as possible, even though many after them can be removed.
