A little confused about these tees.

...like an optional  bonus tee or "extremely Challenging" tee added to various holes?

I guess it's up to you as to whether or not you include them.  In game, there is a Challenge category and those tees will be used if you set up a game for challenge.

Unlike normal tees you can set them in the rough, bunkers, on side slopes etc. In the game each player then gets a set amount of balls from that spot and they score points for distance from pin, whose nearest etc.

Try out a course that has them. I know I put them on my Abbotsley course.

The more courses with challenge tees the better.  They can be used by children playing on Simulators.  Also, OGT runs weekly Challenge Tee fun events.   We also prefer it if challenge tee par's match pars for the all other tees.  i.e. hole 5 Champ tees is a par 5, so challenge tee for that hole should also be a par 5.   It makes for a fun event to shoot eagles and double eagles when challenge tees are placed in bunkers, deep rough, behind trees, etc,,, from 150 yards and in.

Sounds like you are using the Challenge tees as normal ones rather than playing the Challenge mode as designed.
