Here's a project that I've been working on for the last year or so. It's a fictional (as of now, at least) course on real land at the Sand Valley golf resort in Wisconsin. The land has some real potential to yield one of the great golf courses in the world. Hopefully my virtual design will live up to that same standard.

Love the prairie like plantings. Courses with these long waste bunkers are my favorites. ;)

Are you planning on adding any trees? I know Sand Valley has them but you did say it's fictional, I also have a couple friends who have had a hand in giving input on Mammoth Dunes I believe (or Sand Valley) on a few holes. "Brian Silvernail and Brian Zager."

You've done a nice job so far.

I will be adding trees, likely at the end. I’m trying to determine if there’s a way to do them systematically based on what’s actually on the land, taking into account that most of the land is commercial pine trees that have no business staying there.

Oh, and I got the original topo for the property from Brian Z. It’s a great piece of land with endless possibilities.

You sound a little hypocritical.

I'm sure if it was real, environmentalists would argue that your golf course had no business being there either!

I know the area but without trees it kind of looks like Sand Hills..... I guess that's the idea.

I think eventually there might be four courses there, or even five.

One thing i have yet to do is try designing a fictional course on real land. I recently played a wedding gig at a country club in the mountains that had no golf course! Of course the whole evening I'm looking out on the land imagining where it would be, lol...

I’m not sure what you mean. The resort sits on a retired commercial pine forest. Part of the initial work on the land is stripping out the commercial trees and restoring a Prairie dunescape. There are some jack pines scattered around the property that will be left behind.

I’ll take that as a compliment.

There will be some trees dotting the landscape, similar to the first and second course. But they will just dot the landscape and generally won’t come into play. Personally, I much prefer the open look!

Joe told me about this thread, your course is looking good.  I agree it will feel more like Sand Valley with some trees and maybe a bit more sand and less tall grass...but maybe you want a slightly different look from the existing courses.  I would be happy to give this a play test at any point if you want.

I will be adding trees, likely at the end. I’m trying to determine if there’s a way to do them systematically based on what’s actually on the land, taking into account that most of the land is commercial pine trees that have no business staying there.

You can tell fairly well in the Google satellite image the difference between the perfectly planted rows of Red Pines and the randomness of the other trees.  Determining among the random trees which is Jack Pine, White Pine, or Oak is probably going to be difficult though.

White Pines tend to stick out as a bigger tree.  For reference elsewhere you can see them on the south east side of largest pre-existing sand blowout area in a reverse L shape (see attached image).  Those are standing left of the present 3rd green at Sand Valley (the redan hole) with the hole running NE to SW in the blowout area.  Looking at my pics from before the course was built, most of the rest of the trees in that blowout area were Jack Pine but I spotted a few Oak too and I can’t really see a way to see them in the satellite photo unfortunately.

Brian,

Good to hear from you. I was planning to use google earth and its historical images to tease out the right trees. It doesn’t have to be uber precise but I’ll do my best. They’ll mostly be on the perimeter.

I’ve already changed up the grass some to be more brown with a lot more ground covering as opposed to tall green grasses. It’s a lot of trial and error but it’s already more closely resembling the aesthetic I’m looking for. I do want to open up the exposed sandy scrub areas some more.

Oh, very much so. In addition to getting me primed for Prairie Dunes, it's also made me rethink some of my reticence to take on certain course styles out of a fear of my own execution.

Unfortunately the older the historical images are, the lower the resolution gets so I don’t know how useful they will be.  Beyond the newest three images you can’t see the rows in the Red Pines anymore.  If one of my pics from 2013 happens to be in a spot you’re looking at it might help.  You can turn Panoramio images on in Google Earth under Layers > Photos and the blue squares of my pics will show up to click on.  Not sure if they are going to be there much longer though because Google is apparently shutting down Panoramio on Nov. 1 from what I've read.
