It sounds like what you're really asking is why more people aren't playing online and specifically in unlocked open rounds waiting for strangers to join.
That's a very specific way to play and enjoy the game and quite different from not playing the game at all.

Isn't this sort of obvious?
Many are probably disenchanted with the current game, know a new version is coming at some point, and are waiting for news about when/what/etc.
They are probably checking the forum and participating in the discussions while waiting and hoping for news of v2 which was teased and talked about a long time ago now.

Online gaming and hosting a game, don't do that, bud! Sorry.
It don't mean I don't play the game though.

A very fair question and I'm glad you asked it. I was all into JNPG for over a year after its release and played it regularly in tournaments and in online multiplayer. I was one to set up a lot of unlocked 9-hole matchplay sessions and got a lot of takers. What put the brakes on my JNPG play time was the release of The Golf Club 2. As a controller player, I fell in love with the tightly integrated, mo-capped swing animations, and the game's tempo component, as rudimentary as it is, in the swing interface. It really does add another dimension to the swing and gives it nuance that otherwise wouldn't be there. I also liked the upgrade that HBS made to TGC 2's 3-D rough, which really separated it from the pixelated 2-D rough that handicaps JNPG, IMO.
TGC2 doesn't hold a candle to JNPG in terms of online multiplayer in terms of functionality and gameplay options... in fact, I find TGC 2 to be mostly unplayable in its only halfway functional gameplay mode, 2 player stroke play due to communication lag. However, TGC2's Society tournaments are fun to play, IMO, and tournaments were still my favorite way in which to play JNPG. I was probably 1/3 online multiplayer in JNPG, and 2/3 tournament play.
Perfect Golf is only a tightly integrated, hi-res, mo-capped golfer animation, 3-D rough (Turf Effects), and hopefully the closer to the golfer "FOV" value of "34" away from having me heavily back into it! I'm hoping to possibly see all of the above in Perfect Golf 2.

What point is that?
People are trying to address your question as best as we each individually can as every person, obviously, has different reasons for playing more/less/not at all.

I hope JNPG2 happens and I hope it delivers an updated avatar and 3D grass. It's shallow of me but these things matter in my world.

I think the reason why you do not see many unlocked rounds in multi player is because the tour rounds are taking up people's available time. There are more players in the lobby now than ever, its just that tour rounds are the focus for most. If there were no tour rounds i'm pretty sure the lobby would have many more open games waiting. These people who are bouncing between PG and TGC forums are not satisfied with either game imo, they are quick to point out PG's flaws without ever questioning the core components of TGC. Last time i checked there were many posts complaining about TGC in their own forums, why don't you guys go and add to their voice instead of pointing out why you are bored of PG, you have a broken game over there that needs fixing....go help or stay in denial, up to you. Some here enjoy PG for what it is, mocap and a tempo element that is reliant on FPS for accurate reproduction offers me nothing. Neither game is perfect, but only one is broken.

It seems that a lot of people have just played the game too much and need a new 'fix'. If you want to get more enjoyment out of PG use CF and design your own masterpieces. I guarantee you'll enjoy playing PG again.

I'm glad I could help illustrate your point, even though I don't fully understand what it was. I hang out here in the hope that I'll pick up some news about a future Perfect Golf game that will address the three critical areas that are keeping me from playing it routinely. I thought about it a bit more, and if I were a 3-clicker or motion swinger, two of those three critical areas (mo-capped golfers and tempo in controller swing) wouldn't be an issue and I'd be playing it as my dominant golf game.
I'm not saying anybody is wrong, nor am I trying to bag on JNPG, I'm just trying to answer the question as to why I prefer another game over it right now. There's no objective answer as to why I prefer TGC 2 over it presently and it's a matter of opinion and personal preferences, so I'll just leave it at that.
