I'm trying to use a Steam controller on Mac OS X. Steam recognizes the controller, but after starting JNPG in Big Picture Mode, the controller vibrates but does not seem to be recognized by JNPG. When attempting to change from Mouse to Game Pad, the Game Pad selection screen shows "unknown controller" and runs a 30 second countdown during which I have no keyboard, mouse or controller input to make a selection.

I have tried connecting the controller by every method, bluetooth, dongle and cable with no effect. The controller is recognized and usable in other games.

Any thoughts?

You may not want to hear this but if i were you i'd source a better controller, the steam controller is a bad axis pile of rubbish.  You can basically jump straight to tour pro and pin seek from the get go, its a straight shooter.  If you prefer the challenge of a really good controller swing then this pad will not provide it i'm afraid...good luck!

I probably will try another controller. It just seems like an app that runs under Steam should at least recognize the Steam controller. Any controller recommendations?

xbox 360 official ( very cheap now )

Xbox one official

Both do a great job but i found the xbox one pad was easier and better when trying to shape shots.

Just stay away from 3rd party controllers that imitate the official console controllers, they tend to be dead axis straight shooters.

although a new controller will make play better, I think you need to get out of big picture mode to make the the controller you have work. I had a problem a while back where my xbox 360 contr. wouldn't register and I couldn't switch to mouse and kybd. I believe it was big picture mode. I am using a PC though.

Thanks DoGgs. I will be trying other controllers and will try to report back on my success for the benefit of any other Mac die-hards out there.

Brokenclub - Thanks for the input, but I don't think the Mac version allows the game to run in anything but Big Picture Mode. The really odd thing with the Steam controller is that the one button that does work is the right finger paddle. It takes a screen shot.

My goal is to find an input method that provides a more realistic experience. Using the 3-click mouse method I hit 275 yards straight down the middle -- that's not only unrealistic, it's a little boring. My real golf game is much more, let's say, dynamic! The mouse swipe input methods are a lot better but I'm still hoping a controller will add something more...

No. No. I'm on Amateur level. Still just learning my way around the game.

As DoGgz says the official Xbox 360 or Xbox One are the way to go. I use the Xbox 360 and play Pro level at PGLS and fight to score par and my scoring average is probably between 74 and 75. Lots of fun tho and real challenge and come over to PGLS and give it a go as of right now I am the only player there using a controller. Sad as they all feared the straight shooter controller and they got one player who struggles to break par but enjoys the hell out of it.

Thanks. I'll try to source an Xbox 360 or One controller and try that. I can confirm that a Sony Dualshock also isn't recognized by JNPG, at least on the Mac OS X platform. In both cases, Steam recognizes the controller, but PG sees it as an "Unrecognized Controller" and stops there. I'm sure it's just a matter of passing parameters from Steam to JNPG so hopefully one of the developers will take note. In the meantime I treat trying to get technology that should work to work as my form of gaming entertainment. Fortunately, the weather here in OH is allowing me to play a lot of actual golf while I work out how to best play simulated golf when the weather turns.

Not gonna happen. As far as we know, development is dead.

[edit] More importantly, great courses are still being made by the community, didn't want you to misunderstand.

Fair enough! I'm an admitted newbie to the app. And, I just discovered the trove of downloadable courses. Much to learn...

Just to wrap up this thread -- I did pick up an Xbox 360 wireless controller and receiver. This controller is recognized and works well with JNPG running on Mac OS X.
