I've just received an email saying that Unity 5 personal edition is now free and includes all pro features.

Does this now mean that the restrictions with the publication of courses without the pro version of Unity can now be resolved?

Here is the direct quote from the email I've received:

"It’s a proud day for all of us here at Unity. With the launch of the Unity 5 Personal Edition, we’ve made the full Unity engine with all the Pro features available absolutely free of charge!"

Fingers crossed!

It looks that way, remers. Nothing conclusive yet, but this is being looked into very closely by PP. And I believe they cautiously like what they are seeing. Will depend on deciphering the small print..

All of you who do have a sub-5 Unity installed but no CF yet are probably best served with upgrading to U5 now and take possession of the additional goodies bestowed upon you.

I still use Unity 4.5, because of CF not being upgraded to U5 yet.

Excellent, well at least that appears to be some useful progress even if it's fairly tentative at this stage.

Thanks for confirming K11 because I wasn't entirely sure that I had read and understood the implications correctly.

Good news.

The implications of U5 release are all very positive which is why we have made the decision to move to U5 sooner rather than later (read we are doing it now).  It does bring in some of its own isues which we will have to work through like the introduction of speed tree, but who said life was easy

Thanks Andrew, I figured the switch was imminent, and moved into U5

the day after the free release. I'm looking forward to the higher levels

you guys are sure to reach regarding lighting, collision properties, and,

sound, (think I read something about U5 coming with it's own sound mixer),

but I'm not sure, nor have I looked yet...hmmm.

In a previous golf game development i was involved in Speedtree trees were used and i thought they looked terrible.

Maybe things have changed. :)

Older Speedtree foliage can look quite terrible but it all depended on how much work the DEV wanted to put into his game. You get a DEV that doesn't put all the code in his game for Speedtree and they can look bad but not that bad. Some people you can never please though either.
