Hi PGers

I'm a Mac user and currently play 3-click with my stock Apple wireless mouse.

Have dabbled in the "art" of Motion Swing but just can't get the hang of it!

Based on all the positive comments I'd love to persist and wondering if a proper gaming mouse will improve the experience OR is this sort of peripheral suited only to hardcore FPS, MMO etc... games?

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

I've seen a post in another area of this forum regarding brands so I'm across the higher end stuff, e.g. Logitech, Mionix, Razer, Roccat, and Steel Series among others.

I'm prepared to spend in the range of AUD $70-100 and based on brief research should see me get a very decent "club" for MS.

Cheers

BB

I have the well-regarded Razer DeathAdder Chroma but to tell you the truth, find a plain old Microsoft mouse just as good for the fast FPS Unreal Tournament.

The default polling rate of 125 Hz of simple mice could theoretically turn a perfect 1 second back, 0.25 second through 4:1 swing into anything from a 0.24 - 0.26 ratio. I avoid motion swing in PG so can't say if that is a concern, but if so it might help to up the polling rate to 250 or 500 Hz.

The high DPI offered by gaming mice may give better accuracy for the small finger or wrist motions that vertical and horizontal motions players respectively might choose to employ.

With FPS games, pros seem to prefer a larger arm swing for shooting accuracy at the expense of being able to turn around quickly. Despite gaming mice offering even 10000 DPI, pros tend to stick around the 800 DPI mark with 12-16 inches of movement being required to turn 360°.

Likewise I suspect accuracy in mouse position and timing is also more important in PG's motion swing than speed, so theorize that larger arm motion swings also should work better. That also tends to be the case in real golf to with all these eccentric putting styles trying to eliminate smaller muscle action.

Would love to hear what motion swingers have found.

Great reply! Being a not-so-PC-tech-type I'm not entirely sure I follow everything you said but greatly appreciate your reply. At the very least it will, as you said, lead to other equally interesting and thought provoking comments.

What's the polling rate and how is this adjusted? In Control Panel settings?

Cheers

Hello

I feel a good mouse and mouse pad makes a big difference in competitive gaming. Although there have been advances in wireless technology the BIGGEST no for competitive gaming is using a wireless mouse due to wireless lag issues.

I suggest that you get a wired gaming mouse (at a budget that suits you), a good mouse pad and a mouse bungee if you want to go the whole hog. A good mouse pad ensures that the friction you encounter when you swing your mouse is consistent and the mouse bungee ensures that the mouse cable doesn't get snagged up and ruin your swing.

There are many good quality mice out there that allow you to make massive adjustments to speed and accuracy. One of the big improvements I have found in Windows is to turn the Windows mouse pointer speed settings as low as possible while compensating for this low speed by upping my mouse dpi. This seems to smooth out my mouse swing a lot.

I use a Logitech G502 Proteus Core Gaming mouse a Razor Ironclad mouse pad and a Razor mouse bungee but there are many other great options out there you could choose from, although I am not sure what would work best on a Mac without doing additional research.

Regards

Greg

I dunno about high performance gaming, as I don't play first person shooters.  I have a Logitech M705 wireless mouse and it works perfectly for the Motion Swing.  You just have to play with the in game sensitivity until you find a setting that suits your style.

So DPI and polling speed work in harmony - DPI's poorly named, but it's how many times per inch of mouse movement your mouse scans the mouse pad below to see where it now is. But it keeps that information to itself until the computer asks it for it, which it does at the polling rate - 125 times per second is the default with standard USB devices on Windows.

If your mouse software doesn't allow you to change the polling speed, doing so can be a bit daunting if you're not confident essentially hacking Windows. It requires the installing a new generic mouse driver. To do this you'll also have to put Windows into test mode and digitally sign the untrusted mouse driver. I'm sure there'd be write-ups/tutorials somewhere about it. That's only for wired mice btw, you won't be able to change the polling speed on a wireless mouse. You'd also have to make sure from your mouse's specs it can support higher polling rates.

I purchased a Logitech wired gaming mouse and a nice mouse pad and it has made a world of difference in my ability to use MS.  The thing I like best is that you can set the DPI on fly.  I typically like a VERY fast mouse speed for general everyday use on my computer.  But trying to use this with MS is just not going to work - it's WAY too fast and WAY to sensitive.

It took some experimenting but I basically played with the mouse speed W10 mouse setting and then configured different DPI's on my gaming mouse so that I can click a button and switch back and forth between my "normal" mouse speed and my "motion swing" mouse speed.  Best of both worlds.

However - I must say that I've actually playing PG on my SP3 using Steam's In-Home Streaming.  I used the Microsoft arch mouse and it worked fairly well.  I couldn't play all that well on Tour Pro level with no assists but with min/min I was doing just fine.

Definitely the extra DPI adjustment besides the control panel mouse settings will help you fine tune your motion swing. Wired preferably, but also a good gaming pad. I turned this one long ways to get a good 8" of mouse movement for a swing.  I started out moving my mouse about 2" to swing . Then  went to 4" and then about 6" to 8" for a swing. each extended swing  adjustment gave me more control.

This mouse pad is 12" x 14" and is very thin which i like over the thicker ones.

Interesting that you take a long swing like that.  I tinkered around with doing something similar.  But now I'm kinda set on keeping my wrist in one spot and pivoting off of that.  So I guess my swing is more like what you started with.

I think if I had a different desk setup then I might prefer a longer swing path but I'm not going to change my office furniture just for a game! :)

I use Microsoft's cheapest mouse and have great success with the motion swing. What gaming mice bring to the table are mostly luxuries... extra buttons, adjustable sensitivity, etc. You don't really need any of that for a good motion swing. Do get a decent gaming mouse pad though. And for putting, make sure your mouse sensitivity in the Windows control panel is not set too high.

I ran into this concept on another post but can't find it but users with motion swing also change their windows setting the mouse setting that the windows operating system lets you change .. adjust.  I did save it to a doc file here is the info

Mouse Swing Settings Perfect Golf -

(one guys said)...

I'm on:

1920x1080

0.8

1.0

The key for me was getting my mouse speed calibrated.  I typically use a very fast mouse speed setting but this is brutal when trying to use motion swing.  So I toned it down to the third dot from slowest in the windows settings.  Then on my mouse (Logitech gaming mouse) I toggle between two different DPI settings - one for doing normal tasks (7,000 DPI) and one for MS (700 DPI).  I have my polling rate set to the max (1000).

This gives me solid control of the swing without making it unwieldy.

These are the in game settings im using, but you also need to take your mouse dpi and Windows settings into account, so 1.9 on my PC might not be the same 1.9 on someone else's

1.2

1.9

2560 x 1080

PG dpi 2200

Win dpi 5000

I can't find the thread in my post history cause I didn't post anything but this may help  have not fooled with it yet.
