Announcing my first attempt at recreating a real life course in CF. I present Mill Green GC, my favourite local golf course here in Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire, England, Europe, Earth.

For this I laid down a stitched together google maps texture scaled correctly and sculpted my own terrain elevations from the course guide book and memory with reference to World Composer data (I didn't use the heightmap from WC as I could not get it right) which for this region is not precise anyway.

Meshes were added and textures painted over the google underlay. In a few hidden places the underlay is still visible, though I am slowly going back over the course filling it in appropriately.

The course is an interesting mix of fairly open terrain with areas of dense woodland which the holes have been carved through. There are seven lakes/ponds on the course in which I have lost many balls IRL but in PG they are not likely to come into play too much. (I hack around the course with a 5 iron in real life lol)

Trees are fairly accurately planted, as I planted the trees before painting over the underlay, so the tree positions were clearly visible. Obviously the tree species are not totally accurate but that is something I hope to change in the future.

The terrain size was 3500x2000 which I didn't think worked...but it does :)

I hope to add the sound of cars along the A414 running alongside the 1st and 5th holes at some point.

Not gonna lie, the course is quite demanding graphically due to the trees but it plays fine on my GTX860m system with PRoS on.

Here are a few pics:

Very nice indeed.... wonderful how someone's own little stretch of golfing territory such as a local club can be brought to life with Course Forge in what would seem a relatively short timeframe... and with such high quality results!

Hope to see its release at some point and play a round with you Robbie to see how local knowledge works out! :D

Excellent work Rob. Looking forward to catching further updates of this beauty.

Getting really excited about the number of you guys that are trying your hand at course creation. There does seem to be quite a few top quality courses being worked on at the moment and I for one can't wait for them to be completed and then for them to be made available for playing in the game. Let's hope we don't have to wait too long for this.

I have an interest in course creation also and have been slowly getting used to using Unity for the time being but like everyone else I'm just waiting for CF to come out so the really exciting work can begin.

For those of you that do have CF....thanks for all your efforts thus far... keep up the good work. This game is shaping up to be something really special and further thanks need to go to the devs for what has been produced so far. Well done guys.

Looks great.

As to the car sounds I would say only do it if you can get it sounding realistic. I've played far too many courses on Links 2003 that had added sounds that were supposed to add realism but were poor looped sound files and just irritated rather than adding immersion. No sound at all is far better than bad sound.  ;)

Thanks for all the positive comments. Cheers guys!

MJ had a look at the course and I need to trim back some of the trees and reduce the LOD on them. Thought I was pushing it a bit!

How many trees we can get by with is going to be one of those things we learn as we do more courses. You think you need a bunch to make an area heavily wooded but playing in game shows that you might not need as many as you think...lol

Thanks this will save me a passport photo and a plane ride I can play the course from here - You should be Knighted .... I'll make a phone call.

Little known fact when King Arthur was trying to make a golf course and he ran into some conflict. King Arthur: There's a peace only to be found on the other side of war. If that war should come I will fight it!    Other important fact. Read the Book of John in the Holy Bible.

I like the tower and am wondering if that is an object that you created or are there stock objects to choose from?  Also noticed the small house behind the trees.  I hope that more objects such as houses and other things like benches are added to courses.  I think it is important to make every course unique using objects, different flags for the pins and sounds that are appropriate for the location of the course.  As it is now, the courses we have available to play all seem to have only one structure by the 9th or 18th hole.  I believe that Ilinois CC has a house by the green on the first par 3.

Regardless, it looks like you are doing some spectacular work with your course rendition.  Look forward to playing it.

It's an electricity pylon but from the angle in the photo you can't see the struts that hold the (unfortunately invisible) cabling.

Thanks for the positive comments. This course is on hold until I get some more lower res trees to plant as currently it far exceeds the triangle limit and i don't want to lose the character of the woodland sections.

As for objects...any object you can find in the Unity asset store can be used. Some are free, some you can buy and of course if you have 3d modelling skills you can make anything you want.
