Maybe we could simply shorten to this to the actual events that occur...

Online

  • Watch Opponent or Prepare Your Own Shot.

This can be developed and suggested further, but why sit and watch your opponent..?

Maybe place yourself upon your own shot position, if not hitting first, and have your opponent in a smaller camera on screen. This allows you to setup your shot, instead of watching/waiting etc.

None of us always take the same route to the green, but ultimately we all arrive there... so, until we do.. keep the focus separate unless the options require it.

  • Greens/Putting

This is another area we can embark upon as suggested in this post, but again, have an option to view what your opponents are doing from various positions around the green.

I honestly don't want to see my animation doing some sort of fist pumping.. it isn't what I'd do.. a big grin yes.. clap my opponent, maybe too. Generally it would be a congratulative comment, but I'd definitely not go woo wooing and high fiving.. it's not British lol..

Maybe factor that in, regarding type of animated actions to be used by your own character.

I meant not give away the shot result more in terms of the player themselves, not for gamesmanship reasons.  As a few had mentioned, in LINKS the ani would start celebrating after a well struck iron shot was on the way and you knew it would be close to the pin.  Also, some reactions off the tee would give away that you missed or hit the fairway almost immediately.  Those are the instant reactions that I wouldn't like to see after the shot is hit.  Honestly I probably wouldn't use the post-shot hotkey much, it was just an idea and I was trying to think of a way to control a golfer a bit more without being excessive but also not being robotic.

The tee/ball placement idea is much more pertinent to the overall experience though.

Speaking of how the ANI looks post-shot, another idea is to have the follow through mimic the shot hit (full finish for a draw, high hold-off type for a fade, low finish for a knockdown... etc )  I don't mean pre-programmed draw/fade shots, this would be based on how the shot was hit by the snap/clubface at impact (I know not technically correct, but not sure how else the game could determine draw/fade)

i.e If you snap/release too late, your character will finish higher than normal and the ball will curve right (right hander)

Another luxury that I'm not even sure is possible.

I understand now: You wanted to de-linksify the auto-giveaways. This leads us back to the real-time physics of PG as described to us as the game not "knowing" in advance if the ball will end up close or not, because it will still be busy calcultaing the shot. If so, there will be no automated reactions.

With you about tee box placement. I asked MJ in a CF thread if the game would include the possiblity to select the spot on the tee box from where to drive off, as IRL. I needed to know that for course design purposes, because that would have given me the choice to build the tee areas a bit wider so as to add a bit of strategy on the tee shots. Unfortunately he answered in the negative: No lateral tee placement. Still, watching the avatar planting his tee would be nice to have.

I believe tee placement will eventually be included when playing the game,  as Perfect Golf is an attempt at a real simulation of golf. Maybe just some misunderstanding of a post by one of you..... or maybe by one of us?

Correct. I went and looked it up just to make sure. My bad. Here's the bit from my question thread:

1.3. Will the players get to place their ball on the tee, to give themselves a slightly better angle for their shot? If so, we would need to know this now to factor it into our tee area designs (breadth/width) and its position.

I know this is planned

Bortimus - I should've read closer. Your point is very valid. I hated the fact that during links you would basically know if you made a putt or hit the fairway before the ball got to its destination. It certainly took away from the experience and fun of the game
