First off, I'm totally not into completing achievements myself. I do not consider them interesting.

But lots and lots of online players do - and most computer games nowadays cater to this very human instinct of achieving something for the sole sake of achieving something. Games usually come with achievements. Some players are compulsive achievement completionists, as I learned in TWO, to my own bemused amazement. For many, achievements are a way to increase re-playability and offer something worthwile to shoot for. Same with trophies: A cluster of a few pixels forming a gilded salad bowl goes a long way to entrance players.  

(The achievement of earning 10 trophies probably will be the most coveted one).  

 

So: Question: Will PG include achievements?

 

Aditional questions to the community at large: Do you want achievements? Which ones?

I don't care at all about achievements but having an achievement mode as an option seems that it would cater to a lot players.  And please, no message boxes popping up during the round if the other player enables achievements but I've disabled them.  Keep it on their screen! haha

I think the inclusion of achievements depends on PG appearing on Steam.

 

Just about every game I have ever played on Steam has achievements. They are basically the same as the trophies you get on XBOX/Playstation. Some games have quite a lot, others just a few. Some mean hardly nothing (like an achievement for playing a game for 5 minutes), whilst others show that you are a top dog and have achieved something not many others have (like finishing a game on every difficulty level).

 

Like K11 and Bortimus, personally they don't mean much to me, but some folks wear them like a badge of honour, lol.

 

Definitely something I would think is probably not even an agenda item in Dev meetings at the minute, but I appreciate online/community gamers of today like to shoe off their in game rewards more than others.

Well, for me - this a MUST.

 

If this is done well, and thought about, it could have a great impact upon the Community. It doesn't have to be simply a lot of pixels in a gilded salad bowl design... it could become something far more rigid and restricted in how it's displayed. If someone here unlocks something and displays an icon on a site next to their name, it will become copied and exaggerated. We won't know who is displaying what, and if they're honest.. it would make the idea a mockery of why it was added.

 

However, if done centrally and hardcore. Then maybe it could be done and utilised professionally, linked to your golf character. Almost like playing some online RPG games with hardcore characters (die and you lose everything). But in the golfer sense, if a Tournament mode was created specifically for using that golf character in paid Tournaments or prize Tournaments, then you can begin to design something purpose built for players whop want that type of thing.

 

It's obviously something for alot later in the games development..

Again with all the Links and Tiger Woods crowd, they want what ever is in there game in this one. Again how about lets try for originality at a golf game once? Not something that has been hashed out 20 times already.

Lets just play GOLF.

Me too. Yet it mattered to many.

The problem with TWO was that you couln't help achieving stuff whether you wanted it or not. KA-CHING: "You just hit a 250yd drive. Well done!"

As for going for originality… in this day and age I don't see originality being rewarded by large segments of the clientele. Though I do agree that some more and deeper thought about this is required and, as IanD correctly puts it, if done well, it can affect the playing community.

 

To wit: Back in TWO we created a new group called SUPERPACK and put up a website with its own SUPERPACK Hall of Fame. This was very well received by our group members and some of them would really go after each and every honorable mention, even though, to be honest, it was a based on a best-of of TWO achievements. And since players were asked to announce their feats on the group chat, so that we Admins could go and confirm it, this brought about extra communication, encouragement and friendly rivalries within the group.

 

I'm still not into it. But I'm definitely not saying that this is bad or useless, not at all.

Really don't understand this post in your assessment.. where are the Links crowd...? Where exactly was this in the Links game too..?

 

Like you, I'd want something better than the basic achievements, something original. It isn't something likely to appear from Day 1 or the end of the week regarding updates either.. but there can be ways of making something more, regarding this suggestion. Integrating it into a Career or Tournament mode would suit it's purpose perhaps. Who really knows where we will end up once we have a Golf game..?

 

However it's simply a discussion.. lol

Ian - agree, I'd like it linked to tournies or a career mode.

If others want it for particular shots, that is fine too, but not one I'm interested in.

I've said it before, my main reason for playing Links (am I allowed to mention that?!?!?) is to escape into the world of a pro golfer. In real life I'm an erratic 16 handicapper.....the last thing I want to do in a PC game is okay like I do in real life!

So for me, achievements come in the form of the game of the game identifying key milestones, e.g. Birdie streaks, closest to the pin etc. when I'm in a tournie, these can be reflected in terms of the tournie itself, especially where competing against other real players.

I don't want them to be able to unlock golfing equipment or improvements to distances I can hit a ball.

I can drive the ball 285yds IRL, why should I start PG at 225yds and have to play x rounds to gain a few more yards.

What I mean is 2 of the most user based communities (Links and TW) are users in this forum. I would simply just love to see an original golf game and let them do how ever they want but don't do this and don't do that just because if it's not in there you won't sell the game because that is what the fan base wants because it is in another game they play.

I love my game I play, I happen to think it has the best physics but that doesn't mean this won't because it is not finished. That also doesn't mean I won't play this game as well because I'd love to design a course where a whole HOARD of people play it instead of the 8-9 players we have now. Spending many hours on a course you design and play only twice a year kind of sucks. I just want to help them out as well, Our game is tough for beginners, and we have no frills, but I can still shoot -4 to -7 here and there. I am a high handicapper as well, but I still want to play realistically instead of fake golf -12 to -20 a round.

AJ has already said that they are not remaking Links, TW, CPG, WGT, JN etc. etc but said they see no reason not to take elements from any game that worked well, throw them in to the PG mix and try and improve on said features.

 

I see no harm in anyone from any other golf game community from years gone by suggesting we have this, that or the other in PG. Let the Dev's take the suggestion on board, and if they feel it can be implemented, let them decide how best to implement it to improve on the games of the past. If previous golf games did something well, lets try and have something similar in PG. We are not demanding we have this and that included, just suggesting ideas.

 

Golf is golf. I'm not really sure how you are going to get a totally 'original' golf game unless it's based on the moon.
