So it was brought to our attention thru TPC Brians thread that course files will be around 60 to 100 mb's, if I read that correctly. The courses we design over at course source for the Tw's game are from 2 to 15mb's..

So I was wondering what effect if any will the big increase have on my computer?

Thanks...

Hi Axe:

It's possible that when they talk about file sizes of about 60 to 100Mb, they could be including the library files needed to play the course also.

As far as the effect of the large files on your computer is concerned, that will depend upon how many gigs of data are on your hard drive!!  If there is alot of data on your drive, (half full or more then half full,) the drive will slow down.  Other then that, generally, large files have little effect on the performance of the computer.  The main key to using large files is having enough free memory in the computer.

Hope this will be helpful to you, Larry.

Make it a suiper day.

Mike

The latest designs made in the APCD for Links 2003, using Hi-Res texture sets are often well in excess of 100MB, which for me is not a problem.

1. I have internet which downloads reasonably quick.

2. Have plenty of space on HD

Despite these hefty filesizes, the course loading times after each shot are not bad (sometimes you have to reign back the graphic quality, but this is rare).

So if PG courses start appearing and are 200MB+ per course, I am happy with that, as they will have the added bonus of being 3D, whereas Links 2003 are 2D, so I think for me I would have to be looking at courses nearing 500MB before I started getting slightly concerned, lol.

I guess only AJ, MJ, Steve and Brian can offer any feedback on this thread, as I guess they will be the men with the answer.

After typing this and moving on to another thread, it seems like MJ has given a response:-

Just a note regarding course size, the unity project and the actual course file it creates have completely different file sizes. Some of the projects I've worked on get well over 2 GB in size in the editor but when you make the build for the course they compress down to an average of between 60MB and 100MB.

;)

I'm guessing that we perhaps will have our Unity project with all our assets in, and when we create a course it is like creating a Scene which will then only store the objects that is uses?

Bruce, can't help you there I'm afraid.. may need to await the guys using the CF to discover more.

Like others here I was extremely interested in the course file size, and whilst Mike suggests the average courses are between 60-100mb, there are likely to be a concerted few that may exceed some expectations. Downloading for some, will become a larger problem than it perhaps already was. For me, I've never had a great connection but then I've never lived in the right areas since Broadband was invented. Dialup was good enough for those old days though, so I manage comfortably.

Hard Drive space will certainly be something we all consider and the ability to store and play from, is another address for the guys here at PP to factor into the PG system. Ideally, like Links, it allowed us to install courses from any drive attached and use them accordingly when needed (shadow file etc).

It will most likely become a feature where we all only keep the courses we enjoy or consider good enough. I like the fact the Designer is a little trickier to use than perhaps the other Golf Club game (HB) that may make things too easy and messy for courses to be created. Still to this day, Links Corner has one of the best Course Databases around, allowing you to discover not simply whether it is a Parkland or Links style course, but filesize, difficulty, user ratings and often reviews. I see no reason not to utilise what other sites have done, not simply ones we know but all of them, in setting up something that would aid in ensuring the shelf life of this game has a vast array of courses to enjoy.
