Just wondering how far we can go with creating our courses without the Courseforge tools?

So far I have been able to import a height map and overview for my local course and I am fairly happy with the result. I am under the impression that Courseforge only creates 'golf stuff' such as tees, fairways, greens etc and let's you define holes. What about non golf parts of our terrains such as adjacent housing estates or farms that the player will never venture to but will see as they may be right next to our course. Do we treat these areas as standard unity terrain and can paint these as such? Also, is there any point doing terrain painting with our golf areas of the course as it seems that these will be underneath our splines created in Courseforge.

Also, are water areas like rivers or lakes classed as golf terrain or standard unity terrain?

Hi Bruce,

I've been doing some 'trials' in Unity also, using various golf course 'terrain' files I have.

Other than what you have already done, the only suggestion I have is that you can use Unity, on a copy of your course preferably,

to try the various things available to Unity, such as manipulating those non-course areas to remove / add terrain features - get a

handle on how to smooth / sculpt terrain using the terrain tools - add 3d stuff etc etc..

With the areas that are right next to the 'course' in one of mine, I re-sculpted the terrain to take it from 'housing' to a 'hills with rock outcrops with streams running through it' type terrain & then tried various 'textures' to see if it would fit in with new look.

I don't want to do too much to any course till C.F. is available & like you see what is what.

You got it right about "golf stuff" only, Bruce. The rest is all Unity and can be worked on already. Housing estates and farms can be prepared and/or included now. You can paint the standard terrain with textures as much as you want already now, even on the golfy bits. These will be covered up by the CourseForge meshes, true, but that will still leave you with about 90% of the terrain NOT being covered.

You may have to re-visit your Unity work once you have the Forge, and make a few adjustments and changes, but that is par for the course. As long as all your models and textures are available, that's no big deal.

I would also humbly suggest that any more time you put into Unity is not wasted - you will get precious mileage that will serve you in good stead once CF comes out. You will be able to hit the ground running.     If you feel you have done everything you can on one project, start a new one.

(I have 7 projects in line in different stages of development)
