Forgive me for going slightly off topic here, but I've recently updated to win10 and downloaded files are directed to the Download folder with no option to direct a preferred location. With win7 you had the opinion to "save as" so you could choose a download location. My question to any Win10 users here, am I missing something to change this default downloading situation or is this the only option. I would appreciate any feedback on this.

You can change your default save locations for anything you download in Windows 10.  Here is one of the links explaining how to do it.   http://winsupersite....ions-windows-10

You also can change the default location of your downloads of files from Google Chrome and Firefox.  A simply search will call up those links for you if needed.  Hope this helps you sir.

Thanks GB, but that only changes The "default " location. What I'm looking for is the ability to chose a location at the time of downloading which was the way it worked in win7. When you download a dialogue box opened at the bottom of the screen with the options to: open, save or save to. Choosing the last one gave you the ability to choose where to save the file. That is much more convenient than using a default location for all downloads.

No worries.  I still use Windows 7 Pro as I hated 8,8.1, and Windows 10.

As much as I believe all computer users should be able to manage files, including compressed archives and their sub-directories, I understand that some will continually struggle with it.  It might help if the designers or whomever creates the compressed files always did it consistently (either with or without the sub-directory included), but that will likely never happen either.  :)

Am installer (self-extracting) for the course might be best, but I'm not sure if that can be written for PC, Mac and Linux as one file.  Alternatively, they may need to be a self-extracting file for each OS.

Anyway, it's late and I still want to get through 3 pages of posts since my last visit here, so I best move on ...

I know this is an old thread, but I thought I would chip in, just in case you never got this straightened out.

The selection of a download location is down through your browser. In Explorer (or whatever the new name is), look at your address bar. In the top, right-hand corner you will see three dots. Click that, then scroll down the pane that appears until you get to  SETTINGS. Click, scroll down again until you get to Advanced Settings.

And.... scroll down again. This time you are looking for Downloads. There is a button there you click to change your preferred destination folder.

Strangely enough, in Google's Chrome, it is the exact same process. Upper right corner top open a menu, scroll down to settings, then scroll the advanced settings and scroll to download where you change the destination. Odd, eh?  Maybe it is time to refresh my tinfoil hat.
