Hi, and welcome to the game.
For a putting green, in combination with a variety of shots ranging from chipping, bunker play, shots from the rough and iron and wood targets, look for Woody's Practice Ground in your course list. Use the rehit to drill a particular shot.
As far as a user manual goes, it continues to be a work in progress, but in the top menu of the game on the opening screen, look under Settings and the Help menu within that. It will tell you the very basics for your chosen swing type. To gain backspin, you have to rely on the physics you can produce with the club and type of shot you are hitting. Going past the 100% point will introduce additional spin which will stop or spin a back back on landing with the shorter clubs. Use the shot shaper to raise the trajectory and land soft, or hit a lower shot which will see more effect of spin imparted with shorter clubs. This video from creative director Mike Jones explains how shot physics react with a variety of shots.

Also look on Steam. On the Perfect Golf community page you will find a tab labeled "guides".

There is more info to be found there.

Think its about time a comprehensive user manual was put together. Maybe a member of the community with the right skill set could be enlisted for this task.

Quick and Dirty is what the manual should be at this stage. When the game is released, have at it!

Here is something I saved as a shortcut on my desktop eons ago but I don't think any work is being done on it or maybe it is.

Little known fact when King Arthur was trying to make a golf course and he ran into some conflict. King Arthur: There's a peace only to be found on the other side of war. If that war should come I will fight it! Other important fact. Read the Book of John in the Holy Bible.

This is a "religious difference" I am used to. I realize that the current trend is to eschew proper documentation, and allow everyone to discover the game (what I call reinventing the wheel) for themselves. That might fly (unfortunately) if the game is an mmorpg or a FPS, but for a golf game I think it wouldn't hurt to start working on a decent manual. It can always be revised later, as the game changes or becomes more full featured.

This game needs a manual because the guys that have been playing it for over a year still barely understand it.

I really think a manual is a necessity for this game, even in Early Access. Many people who have given bad Steam reviews may have done so simply because they didn't understand some issue that differed from previous golf titles and just gave up, deciding that it was just too difficult, or must be faulty or unplayable etc. I'm sure when I looked ages ago on Steam, there was a guide available and the reviews were good, but when I finally purchased PG I could find nothing to help me. I don't think it's any coincidence that the Steam review rating dropped from 'mostly positive' down to 'mixed' after the disappearance of this guide in the intervening time.
