Redrew entire OB spline; problem not solved.
and no other rogue OB hiding somewhere? For me it was a second OB spline that was the cause.

I think I spotted what I did wrong ... I tried to do just like you , but I think I took the wrong control point when I did the second "end water hazard" .... I took the one before the starting point instead of the one after .... It sure look like you are doing the rigth thing John ...

OK, problem solved. I did in fact find a rogue spline; I'm not sure if it was an OB spline or what - it was roughly the size of a single dot. I had to run debug mode to find it.
It happened to be right in the area where the weird drop was, which was on the edge of the plot in an open space devoid of anything.

well done and good tip from Acrilix, i had the same problem a while ago , easy to do when working with splines
