Your best bet would be the subscribe to the speedtree modeler for a month and then take the default speedtree palm which comes with Unity standard assets and make a bunch of variations on it. You can even make bushes etc with the same model once you have practiced a little bit.

PS if you subscribe to the modeler you also get a few bonus speedtree models of different plants which you can download and keep as well as using the modeler to make multiple variations of them and all the assets that came with CF to boot. I would regard at least one months subscription essential for all serious course builders as having a wider variation of models for the tree types you already own is an absolute must.

Tweaking existing models is pretty easy, creating new ones from scratch not so much!

None of that extra stuff is a must. Plenty of great courses with stock stuff. One trick for trees is to plant by dragging in versus the mass planting tool. You can then scale and rotate as desired. If you want a bush, scale much smaller and plant so the trunk is not visible. One of the original user created designs and one of my favorites, The Prelude, by Matthew Rose is all stock CF, I believe.

I've found you can make some variations of the stock trees by bringing them in and just hitting the random button or changing a few parameters here and there like the leaf size, etc...

But it's hard to make something specific.... I'm kind of at an impasse with some of my real courses because of tree styles. I can't really justify $39 for a computer tree at this point.
