Last night I was unable to access the PP site.  At the same time when I attempted to play JNPG, the only courses showing up were stock courses, no community or courses that I had purchased.  In addition my avatar was not dressed in the clothing in the update PP provided some time back.  Late last year, there was a day where I could only play JNPG offline and the situation was the same as all the above.  Yesterday I did a verification of my game files and also noticed that there was no build number indicated.

I have all the community courses that I have downloaded backed up on a memory stick but given that I can't play them when PP or Steam is down there doesn't seem to be any point to backing them up.  I would like to see JNPG re- programmed so that updates and downloaded courses files are on our computer so that if we play offline there is no difference then when we are connected to PP and or Steam.

I would also be interested in purchasing a CD edition of JNPG if one is ever offered.  It could be updated by downloading patches and updates.

said before all courses need to be kept in the same manner the orignal PP courses are, and in the same place.

so offline play and when glitches like this last one happens we still have all our courses to play or at least the one's we have paid for.

I've also noticed that when pp is down not only do you lose access to the user created courses you also lose access to the calibre ball as it reverted back to the avante.

yea, had the same thing this morning, was looking forward to a couple of rounds at Melbourne but alas it wasn't to be ... no custom courses available  :(

Steam was working fine, it looked like a PP outage.

if the basic PG courses are available off line/PP down they must have a different setting? why not give the user made courses the same setting?

Clearly the online check is in place to protect paid content.

But surely the free courses don't need the same 'protection', this design decision is now eliminating a huge % of courses from our libraries whenever PP glitches.

A backup server for content verification would be nice...

I know its a bummer, but think of user made courses as add~ons such as an app on your phone. If people hi jack jnpg they should nor be allowed to play user made courses either. So if pg golf servers are offline you wont be able to verify that you bought game. For the amount of time the perfect golf servers have been down in the last 2 years I think bitching is un warranted. I for one can live with the way it is now...

The dark side of Steam DRM. Gotta take the good with the outages.

I do hear what you are trying to say. A STEAM outage is one thing. I mean you cannot access any of your games in that case. STEAM however has a significantly or to say the least vastly larger user base and consumers to keep it going and outages are tolerated. You can play some of those games offline as well. STEAM has a larger infrastructure and longevity expectation than PP could ever have. Eventually if PP no longer wants to maintain their servers then user made courses are out? Perhaps if they decided to close shop they would then open up the code so that the game could be played without restrictions while offline. An assurance like that would go a long way towards appeasing my concerns.

At any rate a PP outage that affects the use of user made courses kind of defeats the purpose of STEAM does it not. Aren't there ways for STEAM (if up) to authenticate purchase and allow the use of user made courses. Maybe set up through the WorkShop. When I design a course. I mainly design it for myself to play on. I tend to play my own course(s) at least 75% of the time. I then spend the other 25% at other venues as my course(s) are my local or accessible courses as a virtual golfer. So this kind of situation does concern me even though they have been very rare.

I guess I'm saying start designing your own courses and when these types of outages occur - STEAM is UP and we can access and play the game in a restricted fashion - you might have the same concerns that I do. At least it feels wrong to me. Is there really no solution to protect the interest of designers that frankly add a lot of value to the game for nothing?

SC, you may recall the initial development of PG, regarding PAYING to play the User Designed courses...?

Basically, this allowed us all to play any user designed course, by paying a monthly subscription. Only those that paid, could access user courses. This would then have been setup as you would want, via your post above. However, the outcry regarding payment to play user courses required PP to rethink how they could best 'sell' this game. It also meant ensuring protecting us from pirated copies, and protecting themselves from having vulnerabilities. They have done this, and pirated copies can only access one course. Unfortunately, the minimal cost, is to us WHEN the verification fails or offline. It is a smaller cost to us than what was initially planned.... I guess what I'm saying is, it rarely occurs, and if more time was available, maybe it could be better designed. However, for now.... it's better, alot better, than the original design!
