At what point does the off topic forum of a computer game become irrelevant, I wonder? Could it be around the stage when some members start misusing it as their personal blog? Surely, if so, it would be much more proper for them to open a blog of their own somewhere off-site? They certainly would not want to clog up the general forum overview with their latest posts about personal ruminations, I wager?

Of course, I have no idea whatsoever of what I'm talking about - and most certainly do not have any single individual in mind as I write this.

I wish PP had a better monitoring of the chat lobby and banning users who are abusing it.  The abuse went on way too long this morning.

I hope that this will be a wake up call for PP.

To answer the op's question, "off topic" is "off limits" when they violate Forum rules.

I kinda doubt PP would pay people to monitor the online chat 24/7.  But, I could be wrong.

Agree. Waste of time, effort and money. But when people abuse the online chat and other users report them, it should be dealt with.

In my opinion, PP has been far too lenient in this area. The forum is the same way. Trolls are banned and then allowed to come back under various names and start the same crap all over again.

Yeah, I don't really understand the rationale behind "letting people back in that have been banned".

At least the forum has the 'ignore' option, which for said poster, I am making use of.

I do wish it were more aggressive though.

I've used some forum software that can truly hide a blocked/ignored person from any sort of view at all.  No inline "this is hidden, click to show" stuff to even remind you of their existence, etc.

Buck and mebby,

Not easy to do when you have a product to sell.  And its a lot of work.  On HB forum, you might see 5-7 HB-admin/employees at any given time.  Here, its just a few forum mods.

I think you might be confused as to what I meant.

Some forums have blocked people nearly completely eliminated from your view, which is great.

It's not a Mod workload issue, but rather a feature of different pieces of forum software and how a blocked or ignored user is displayed to others.

Re:  Workload of mods

These guys here are digging their own grave by letting people back in that they ban.

Once you've determined a user is a "problem", keep them out.

VPN's, Proxies and alternate username issues are one thing, but they've let people back in under the same accounts after being banned.

It's mystifying.

You don't rehabilitate trolls.

They won't suddenly "like you and leave a great Steam review"...

They just need to be banned and move on.

Yeah. I get that stopping some people is nearly a full time job. And I'm all for second chances but when someone like GB is let back in and he then uses his profile to lob personal attacks it's time for another ban. This sort of behavior is rampant here and it just sets a bad tone.

Just my $0.02.

@Buck, do you know how that forum software handles people that randomize their IP address?

I do not, sorry.
That's why I specifically added this part..

VPN's, Proxies and alternate username issues are one thing, but they've let people back in under the same accounts after being banned.

The Stopits type of persistence is definitely a separate problem, no question.

I just don't see why previously banned people are let back in with the same user names (there have been several - the behavior doesn't change much upon the return)

We even have a current user who has come back from being banned, has told Mike who he is, and he's still here.

On most forums, knowingly returning under a different name is grounds for an immediate ban of the new account also.  The same should go for making multiple user accounts (if it's known of course)

It's just a shame that this forums "ignore/hide" doesn't do as complete of a "hide" as some other forums do.

I think if it did, more people would be perfectly content letting trolls yell into the ether as you'd never see it or be reminded they even exist (in terms of most recent post, or seeing their name still inline in the flow of the posts, etc).

There is a solution to the lack of manpower in terms of forum moderation.

Empower trusted users, whomever they may be, to more strictly enforce some set guidelines.

Forum moderation need not be the domain of Andrew and Mike.  They have far better things to do.
