This Verge article struck me as interesting in light of recent discussions surrounding course ratings and working to drive engagement of the ratings mechanism (get people to rate them).

These quotes in particular from the article:

“Five stars feels very yesterday now...”

They also talk about how there is some granularity lost, but in their case when people are just trying to tailor their own experience (for future recommendations), it doesn't matter much and...

"And at the end of the day, it’s really about just getting more people to rate things."

That point is super spot on.  No ratings system matters a lick if it's un or underused.  I still contend that a course ratings system would be better with less than 10 stars. Be it 5, 3, or even a thumbs down system, the goal should be to reduce cognitive load to increase user action and eliminate any ratings tiers that are irrelevant and effectively never used (i.e. Stars #1 - #5-ish on a 10 star scale)

lmfao

So who came in and "rated the thread 1 star"?

C'mon now - Man up - Admit who you are..

Do you hate the topic?

Just hate me and everything I type?

Who are you?

Come out of the dark..

Own it..

That said - At least we are using the entire 1 through 5 stars scale on this thread, right?

Fits the topic theme very nicely...

Ha!   :D

I gave it 1 star because I've never used it before and it made me laugh. Nothing personal.

I like star ratings of courses personally but mostly I think the guys at OGT should run the site precisely the way they want to without distractions. If a person is upset by star ratings then download from PGLS. If people use/don't use star ratings, who cares?

I've discussed this topic too much already and I apologise for that.

Buck, why are your topic headlines in a funky font? Or is it time for me to ditch all my Chrome extensions again to see which one is messing things up?

[edit] Nevermind, I see your funky url.

So, why? It changes the font in my address bar and the tab.

I'm glad I wasn't the only one wondering that.

Some of the fonts are all skewed when using mobile version of forum too. Only seem to be recent threads Buck has started.

Bizarre.

Oh well, let's walk down that path again...

Better ratings are not the issue, imo. Ratings themselves are. I fear mankind is getting too judgmental with all these rating opportunities on the internet - and they clearly lack the wisdom to rate responsibly. My, every humanoid now is allowed to broadcast an opinion? I'm sorry, but that is simply not on in my universe.

Nothing I can do about it except having a personal snit. And decide on new rules which have been in force for the last 8 and a half years: I NEVER EVER rate anything on the internet. And I actively let ratings, if unavoidable, guide me away from high-rated stuff: High ratings indicate bland mainstream taste, Bell curve-polluted boredom, a lack of creativity and audacity and whittled down mass products. So I consciously shun all these things that come tainted with the mark of the mass.

Beware the curse of the sheeples: Rate not or thou shalt be rated!

"And at the end of the day, it’s really about just getting more people to rate things."

Really? Sorry to disagree. For me it's about getting people to shut up.

That last point sure seems awfully negative.

In the context of Netflix, they have ratings so that people can further tailor their own experience and new content recommendations for themselves,

How would Netflix better understand what you want to see more and less of?

Watch history doesn't work as you need ways to say "I don't like this and don't want to see more of it" without ever watching (i.e.  thumbs down is ideal)

LOL!
It's totally cool and I honestly thought it was pretty funny given the context of the thread/article in question.

Thank you for being so honest also!

No disagreement here at all.
Remember though that OGT has publicly lamented the fact that people haven't done course ratings/reviews in the numbers they would like and so I've been trying to help drill down on that and unearth some thoughts as to what could help remedy that for all our benefit.

There's a real issue with getting people to do reviews and ratings in all areas of online stuff.
You really do have to make it simple to do, easy to understand and the results need to be meaningful for the target audience.

Interesting perspective. I must be a shallow individual but I let ratings guide me in nearly everything I research. It's frankly what I use Amazon for the most. It's also how I go about selecting a movie to stream with my wife.

Humans will always have opinions. It's more about how we chose to use them I guess. If anyone thinks they can use ratings in a bubble without considering any other factors then... frankly they are idiots.

Added bonus, it even changes the font of a shortcut of the url to this thread that I drug to my desktop!

Surprising to me that this can be done.

Yes - this is similar to the method I use to hack 3 click tournaments and dominate the leaderboards...

It's simply small caps of default fonts, wherever they are being viewed.
