Hello all.  Have felt up to taking on a new course again.  Looking into photos and such of the course I want to recreate (English Turn), I have noticed large fairway bunker areas with islands of rough within the bunker...

I have been practicing trying to recreate that look.  I thought just drawing a rough spline within the bunker would do the trick, but I come up w/this wonky effect...

I need the edges better defined plus the island not at bunker floor level.  I have seen this done properly on other CF projects.  Can anyone give me some pointers on how this is accomplished?  I could just draw the area without the islands, but that would probably drive me bananas.

1. Make a new texture by cloning the bunker texture. Call it "bunker island" or something. Use this texture for your island.

2. In the blend and lip settings, change all the negative numbers to positive numbers but the same values

3. Swap out the sand for rough (or whatever texture you want the island to be) and any necessary normal map as well. Leave the dirt lip as is. So basically you are turning it into your regular rough texture, but with a bunker lip.

4. Change the property from "sand" to "rough"

Basically, you are creating a "reverse bunker" - by changing the numbers to positive, you are inverting the bunker so the lip will be below the texture.

There is an old thread on this with a video if you need more help. Search for "bunker island" I think.

Thanks Matt! Did not realize this had been discussed so much previously.  And I did find Mike's tutorial.  Thanks for pointing me in that direction.  The Layer's Library sometimes gives me cold chills, but this looks generally straight forward.  I will try to put this to use soon.

Did you go okay with it?

The layers library is a pain in the #$%. I'm still dealing with it right now.

Yeah Matthew, had a little time to practice today on an old terrain...

Was able to create the desired effect successfully. Thanks for your help as always, and thanks to Mike if he happens to be passing by.  Will take this newfound skill to my English Turn WIP tomorrow.

Whenever I create a new layer library, it always seems to change mesh shape of the semi-rough. Instead of staying semi-rough, it seems to change it to rough. This causes it to play like rough instead of the first cut. I have always had to change this after I create my new layer library.

Hey all.  Have ran up against another problem here and was wondering if anyone could offer a possible fix.  I drew a spline for a big fairway waste bunker, but CF would not generate it.  I got a message saying spline contained too many vertices.  If someone could help me out I would greatly appreciate it.

Like it says, too many vertices.

Reduce the number of vertices (preferably on a cloned layer!) by

- making the mesh grid with larger wider

- increasing the meters per point value

Try to insert the values that you have for a green or fairway mesh in there, instead of those for a bunker.

If you do that, the mesh creates less verts. If you used your original bunker mesh for this, know that default bunkers are preset to be densely packed with control points and narrow grids, making it more likely for them to cause your problem if you make them huge. Check out the many little triangles in the "shaded wireframe" view, you'll see what I mean.

Thanks K11! Did not realize adjustments like that could be made.  Will definitely look into it.  Appreciate the help.
