Have installed Linux Mint 19.1 on m y gaming pc and my laptop, dual booting alongside Win 10.

Installed Steam, switched on the beta to use  Proton. PG loads but crashes to the desktop after the 2nd or 3rd shot.

Mint is using the RTX2080Ti card (using Linux driver 415.25).

Any tips from anyone playing under Linux?

I’m dual booting Elementry OS along side Arch Linux. Both run PG fine for me except for one course made by the Classic Rendition team. I don’t remember which course but it will stop loading at around 80%. Using a 750TI with 8 gigs of ram. I’ve done nothing to it other than adjust the video settings to smoother FPS.

Never got PG to run ok on Mint, so I stopped trying it. I had some major graphic glitches but no reboots or crashes.

I unchecked the steam overlay box and that seems to have stopped the crashes. Will play around with it more over the next couple days.

Well it worked fine for one day but now either locks up loading a course or crashes after the first swing.

Runs fine on my laptop though (has a GTX1070) using the same 415.25 driver, 3-16.6 Proton.

One Question: How did you solve the DirectX problem under Linux? Are you using Wine to play PG? Or did you install OpenGL and if so, which version? Because I think the problems I had were DirectX related problems as I didn't use Wine or any other Virtual Box. OpenGL seemed to make things worse for me

He’s using the beta for Steams Proton platform as should any Linux user that has games on Steam. Naturally PG is supposed to run on Linux natively. Valves Proton is like another form of Wine essentially. I have windows fames that now run on Linux thanks to Proton that Wine or any of the other variants could never get to run.

Plus the nVidia drivers with Vulkan help with Windows games & Proton.  Vulkan is meant to replace OpenGL. Can be a pain to get installed in Linux , in fact I'm still not sure I could recreate how I did it.

This I found on a Reddit discussion about Proton.  Could be JNPG is running out of memory and crashing (the Reddit discussion was about a couple other games but it seems to work for a lot of games that crash).

***You need to use a large memory extender LAA. If you're using Proton 3.16-6 or later you can do this by setting "PROTON_FORCE_LARGE_ADDRESS_AWARE": "1", in the user_settings.py or PROTON_FORCE_LARGE_ADDRESS_AWARE=1 as a launch option in steam***

So a few weeks later PG running OK on Mint 19.1, 4.20.7 kernel.  A few things I'll throw out there..........

Installed the new Wine 4.0 stable release. Not sure if/how Steam/Proton interacts with it but no issues since I installed it 10 days ago.

Graphics- I play PG at 4K resolution, RTX 2080Ti  using  the 415.27 nVidia driver. The graphics are pretty good but not quite as good/sharp as they are in Win 10. Overall detail just isn't quite as sharp. Have played with all the ingame settings, figure it's just how the video card/driver & Linux work (or don't) together. One issue is the fairway in the overhead always shows as black.  Toying with picking up a Radeon VII card to compare as AMD drivers are supposed to be better in Linux vs nVidia for gaming.

RTSM- In Windows you have 3 layers to your mouse- the Windows settings, your mouse software settings and the PG settings. In Mint it's just the Linux mouse settings (which are just Acceleration and Sensitivity) and PG. But it seems to be harder to achieve a fluid smooth motion. I have Acceleration set at 75% and Sensitivity at 15% on the Linux sliders (which works great on the desktop and programs), 3.1 and 3.7 in PG's settings. But to get a fairly straight shot off the tee or fairway I have to use a really fast back/forward  motion , literally 1 second total where as in Windows it's a 2 second back & through. The fast swing in Windows gives me a pull every time, the 2 second motion in Linux gives me the pull every time. I've gotten used to it but it took a lot of trial & error to get it usable.

Haven't tried 3-click or controller (controller does work on TGC2019 under Linux).

PG loads so much faster in Linux vs Windows. Like 5-7 sec in Linux, 25-30 in Windows. Courses load a tad faster as well.

Overall I'm happy with how PG works under Linux.

I had a quick view yesterday. Installed mint 19.1, installed steam and PG and just started the game (Nvidia drivers 390 I think) Looked great to me, fast load of game and course, my player
looked good too. The only thing I can say is: The swing meter stuttered like hell. Everything else was great to me. As I only play in 1.920 x 1080 the course looked great to me.
After I can fix my Mint probs I will give it another try. I'm pretty sure I can fix the Swing meter stutter somehow. I just wondered I could do all this without Wine

Who cares...

Do you have the “pause on rendering” turned on in game?

for the past couple weeks I've been trying out the beta of Salient OS by Silent Robot. A rolling release, based on Arch Linux, geared toward gamers and multimedia users. Comes with Steam, Lutris, Wine already installed along with video editing & recording programs. Easy install, looks fantastic. Don't notice any real difference playing PG or TGC2019 on it compared to Mint 19.1 but I do like how Salient looks.
