After over 3 months of testing PG. I finally tonight figured out why I've never really loved the ball appearance. During testing, there was much discussion related to visibility. I no longer remember all of the discussion but suffice it to say some modifications were made.

Yesterday, I indicated in a post, that the ball was too 'translucent'. Today, I had a great shot of that on a landing camera, but failed to take a screenshot. If I had, you would be able to see that the ball has the appearance of a hollow ping pong ball rather that the solid mass of a golf ball. I believe that the solution is to reduce the 'transparency of the ball'.

I've posted in this forum, rather than the 'bug' or 'new feature' forum because this issue, to me, is neither. It's just an enhancement. My preference is to play with out any tail, i.e. comet.

Ya I have to agree with this, from what I've noticed. I think it would be a good idea to make some options for the ball size even color for players to change up.  With the exception of ball color I would not want to see some ball flying through the air that is the size of a baseball.

I mentioned this to Mike a few days ago. Personally, I don't like playing with the ball trail turned on, but it's impossible to see the ball without it. Apparently, during testing there was an attempt to make the ball increase in size slightly as it moved away from you, but it wasn't liked by the testers. In other games I've played the ball colour darkens slightly as it gets airborne, making it easier to see against a light sky.
I think increasing the ball size slightly and making it 'whiter' as mentioned might help.

For what it's worth I tried my best to get a ball size x2 introduced during testing but the powers that be felt it looked unrealistic, and maybe it did. But my argument has always been yes, and so is a ball with a comet trail behind it but we have that. And yes, I don't care for comet trails either but not seeing the ball I enjoy even less. ;)

Well I think at some level they'll have to relent on this a bit. I mean ya it's a sim, but even people who like realistic golf like to have some things they can change up. Being able to insert yellow balls or green is not arcade. Volvik make colored balls, I kinda like the orange ones.

I like the trailer, comet... The only thing is I'd make it a bit more transparent or put the option in for the player to do this. That would actually be best.

Have to agree here. Not seeing the ball properly really takes away from the enjoyment of the game. I use no tracer and mostly the follow cam. I can see the ball reasonable well at launch but it seems to be right after the first bounce that I lose sight of it. There are times when the ball lands on a sloped fairway and it rolls down the slope incredibly slow, as much as 30 sec. in one case, and I can't see any of it. I see the screen slowly ticking in one direction that's how I know the ball is still rolling. The ball does look transparent and for me after landing it's too small.

I actually like the long full ball tracer especially from the side view when you hit a driver and the ball starts out low and climbs.

It would still be possible to *include* a ball size option in the game. Then people could decide whether to use that feature or not :)  I think it worked pretty well in Links 2003 tho

Your looking for a 2 inch ball on a small computer screen that goes hundreds of yards, Hmmmmm...lol

Welcome to any golf game, even the game I play I can't see the ball if I don't use a follow/ball cam after it goes so far and i'm on a 27 inch monitor. I don't think there is anything they can do besides make the ball slightly larger as it fly's through the air and back to original size when it gets near the ground.

I'm all for making the game realistic but let's face it, it's not a high pace action game. If I can't see the ball what's the point ? The follow cam is meant to follow the ball so I can see all the action including  the bad stuff. Unless the ball goes behind a tree or something I should be able to see it from any camera angle. The idea is to have fun as well as realism.

I don't know if you've played TGC but you can see the ball perfectly well in flight, without a trail. As I mentioned before, if the ball darkens when it's against a light sky it's possible to see it without increasing its size, but as flyer01 mentioned, the ball appears to be a little too small.

Nah, you can see the ball at all times playing WGT, have to say I do like the vapor ball they have. But the ball is visible in all shots.

This was the quote from Mike.

"That's a possibility for the future. In dev builds we had a ball that 'grew' as it moved into the distance but people didn't like it too much. I guess we can try it again as an option?"

Hmm, I've been here most every day testing this game and I must have missed that part because I have to use follow cam or I can't see the ball either.. Granted you may not IRL see the ball perfectly at 300yds but really, as much as I love that this game is trying to be just like real life, some things you may need to tweak a little for game play..

Anyway,  I too vote for something to be done about the ball not being that good to see and don't say turn on the comet trail.. Never!!!

I personally don't have too much issue with the ball, using the Follow Cam too... will never use the comet tail either. As for the Devs referral from Mike.. they never let us see it. It likely remained inhouse at that time. I'm kind of glad it did lol..

I do recall a suggestion from K11... he did suggest a Halo effect surrounding the ball.... I'd prefer that than seeing a larger ball.

@IanD and axe360 - Out of curiosity why do you say you will never use the comet tail?

I guess it is a case of I like what I'm using.... I see the ball fine and if it disappears, fine, I'll find it. It almost reminds me of real golf... seeing roughly where it went, and then finding it...

Comet Tails are arcade... nothing more off-putting playing something that wants to get away from that very thing it offers...
