Here's a simple way to get a different appearance from the stock PP water shader.

Note:  Birdie has posted his water settings in the Manilla Southwoods thread. I believe he is using AQUAS.  That is a much more robust asset with way more potential than this.

This is simply an alternative using what is already included in CourseForge.

Here is one of the default water materials

A few simple changes:

The "Base" texture will be what looks like the bottom of the pond/river

For the "Normal Map" use a regular texture and simply ignore the fix now prompt.  This texture will be the form of your water ripples.

The water should look more like this

Tick "Animated Materials" and tweak your settings and the tiling to get the desired effect.

Continually Ignore these warnings when they appear

Maybe someone has done this before but I just starting using it recently.  I accidentally dragged a regular texture into the normal texture slot.

I quite like the effect.

That looks a LOT better Bortimus

I also - still - really love whatever Kablammo did on Willow Heath to make the water look like there is algae or lily pads or something out there.

Gives it a really unique and cool look.

Water is too often overlooked in the game as a way to make a course stand out from others.

Holy cats, that looks great.

I've been able to get some slightly different looks by messing around with the speed and direction, but I didn't realize the ground texture actually mattered.

I always like to go for a little browner/dirtier aesthetic myself so I look forward to messing around with this.

Looks much better than default!

I'm using AQUAS but only in some areas. Its reflection simply doesn't work.

For reflective water i use the MJocean/water4advanced thing.

I second what Buck said, nice water really can make a difference and everybody can still make his water reflective with the onboard stuff named above.

I've been experimenting with this over the last day and am pleased with the results. I think it looks especially good with streams and creeks.
