I know I have read to use 1400-2000 size and something about leaving 250 yards around course for games rendering. the main thing I would like to know about is the other resolution settings that are used and the height setting.

Does setting the terrain height matter at all?

As far as these settings what are the settings you would recommend?

Heightmap resolution
Detail resolution
Detail resolution per patch
Control texture resolution
Base texture resolution

I really don't know exactly how they effect the terrain map when using them with the game. I just wondered what are the best settings to use to get the best results.

I am basically going to be constructing the terrain map from scratch.  I have used JN4/5 and TW06 a lot making courses and those have a built in terrain map editor.  I see the tools they have here let you lay out the basic out lines of the course fairways bunkers greens etc...would most of the course texture colors other than those be from with the unity terrain map?

Sorry for all questions....I just want to get started making a couple of course terrain maps so when I get the CF tools I'll have something to work with.

Thanks, JIM

I would recommend a 2048 control texture resolution as it allows more detail to be painted on the terrains. This has to be done before you start though as changing resolutions mid project you will wipe your textures from the terrain.

hey thanks for the input!  I see we can adjust things for some settings I will read up more about all the settings and get an idea of what they are for.  It's good to know about the setting of the control texture at 2048 as well.  It looks like changing any resolutions after you start will erase your project.

I also found it nice to use the Paint Height tool under terrain along with flatten to add a layer on top over the whole map so you can work with that to form lower elevations for rivers. lakes, valleys, etc...  I tried filling in the whole map.....took way too long..

You'll likely start several times, simply learning the best configuration. However, you learn alot and have quicker ways of achieiving things soon after you learn startup stuff. It's alot of fun...

Oh yeah tons of fun so far I am not majorly into tons of houses or other graphics mostly hole layouts and course set up...I may try to fit in a cart path at times or even a ball washer!! :D

Question of creating  a new terrain

when i course forge, if i wanted to create a new terrain altogether so can understand unity and c/f better

Steps i have done

Gameobject, 3d object, terrain, select terrain in heirachy, cog wheel in inspector, change terrain width/length to 2000 x 2000

mike says control texture resolution  2048 ( so i need a 2048 texture- is that right )

now here is the bit i am not sure of

i want to add a texture to the terrain

select paint brush, add texture and drag your texture into the tile window on left , ok i got that bit,

Now heres the thing i dont understand, if i look in inspector, terrain collider, mikes base terrain, shows material is rough

and if i click the little circle to the right, a window pops up and all the textures have a picture of a pin attached to it, this has me stumped

as with my new terrain it says material none

So i would like to know what this means, before i go any further, otherwise i shall  just use the base terrain,  but i am inquisitive and just need to know,

Thanks

Those are the physics materials so the ball will know how to react when it lands on them. Terrain is usually set to rough, If it were set to concrete for example, the ball would bounce higher if landing on it. You wouldn't see any visual changes other than that.

I believe the Terrain Collider is the setting for any area on the plot that does not have a CF spline applied.

So if you have fairway, semi rough then rough splines applied and also have an area beyond the rough that you paint a texture on, this texture will behave as rough.

sure would be great if someone wrote a manual from a to z, including everything that was needed to start a course, their is so much information here, it tends to get confusing.

I know that sounds lazy on my part, I use max, have posted before what I use for textures and structures.

Cheer's
