There should be a seperate folder with the textures. That folder has to be draged into unity along with the fbx file. I usually just drag them both to the assets folder.

Thanks guys. Ironically I had the same epiphany during my sleep. So your replies confirmed my thoughts. Thanks for they support. Sure makes it exciting to design again.
