7-Zip is my weapon if choice. It's free and easily copes with ZIP and RAR, which will be the main compression types used for PG course files.

Didn't know that rar files would cause this much problem.

It's not the files that cause the problems ... for some computer users the knowledge of how to use software and what it all means is the problem. I don't mean this in a bad way ... i have this experience everyday by helping people with computer problems (mostly it's a lack of knowlege).

Soooo compressed files are not too complicate to understand .... there are different formats .zip, .rar, 7-zip and many more ... BUT BASICALLY they are all the same (compressed data) ... there are serveral programs to open them WinZip WinRar 7-zip etc.

For example I use 7-Zip because it can open (unzip) the most other formats too. So you can open .zip .rar or other compressed formats without caring about what program it came from. ;)

Good to know.

I have changed Spook Rock and Ridgeway to zip files anyway.

With a bit of knowledge of where the courses folder is and some small registry changes, I'm now able to right-click on a course file and select a menu option to extract to my courses folder.  I use 64-bit WinRAR on Windows 10, but I'm sure it could be done for WinZIP, 7-Zip, and PowerArchiver (and probably others) under Win XP/7/8/10.  I haven't used the default Windows extraction utility, so I might give that a try as well, in case anyone is interested.

The default windows extraction utility is all I've used.

Un-archiving custom courses has been an ongoing fiasco at Links Corner for as long as there has been custom courses. I predicted there would be a fiasco here when I saw 7z and rar files being uploaded to OGT. To help these issues we need:

  • All to be zipped
  • Standardized course naming and archive file naming
  • Basic computer know-how for the users, and a sticky thread on how to deal with these files. Links corner has off topic questions asked constantly, you can bet people will ask the same things over and over again here, and they will ask in off-topic forums and sometimes cross-post those questions to several forums because they don't understand internet etiquette.

Not trying to be a dick, just trying to nip this irritating crap in the bud.

True, but I was just stating the obvious. That way, when people ask the same questions over and over the answer will be a quickly pasted link and the thread can be locked. Remedial computer operation questions can get really irritating really quickly.
