Just announced that Muirfield to be removed from Open Championship rota as members have voted against allowing women members.

R&A have now made it a stipulation that to be on the rota, the club must allow women members.

Not sure how gutted they will be as only had Open 3 times in last 24 years.

3 times in the last 24 years is actually quite a bit, once every eight years.

Women...how dare we allow them to play golf

There is nothing worse than being stuck behind 4 women on a golf course who can't hit a golf ball it is much worse than being stuck behind 4 men who can't hit a golf ball at least the men let you play through, The women don't seem to know the meaning of play through

I understand the reasoning, but Muirfield is the best course in the rota and will be sorely missed.  A fantastic layout 1-18.

I just want to say that anyone who is against allowing women, whatever your misguided reasoning...

You sound like a misogynist dinosaur and would honestly do well to simply keep quiet in here.

Re:  Original Post

Absolutely embarrassing in 2016 to see a story like this.

This is a perfect example of why Golf is flailing in popularity (in the US at least).

What an immense turn off to progressive, modern and forward thinking societies and their families.

Turnberry can move up in the rotation

From what I read in December '15, Turnberry had been scheduled to be host in 2020, but now the course has been dropped from the rota (for now at least) due to comments made by The Trump, which apparently the R&A wanted to distance themselves from, so have punished The Trump by denying him the opportunity to host The Open. FTR, this wasn't a women member related issue.

Obviously, there is time for all this to change.

If they drop Turnberry, Troon (also doesn't allow women) and Muirfield, there won't be too many left. Gonna have to add a couple methinks.... probably good news for Portrush.

Troon, does actually have a two clubs, one for men and one for women. So they do allow women members, just not in the one club, although there are discussions ongoing at Troon with regards to setting wheels in motion for the memberships to merge and have a membership like many 'normal' golf clubs do.

BBC website (2 days ago)

Royal Troon Golf Club is consulting members over whether to end its men-only membership policy.

The Ayrshire club, which is hosting this year's Open, shares its facilities with Ladies' Golf Club Troon but both have separate clubhouses.
