Anyone know a good user friendly piece of software for this.

I've found some good 1m lidar for my local courses in the UK, but it comes in the .asc format

I've found a program called terrain bender which opens them straight up, in a 3d model which you can then export as what appears as a height map esque image, which I could convert to raw in Photoshop

I'm not 100% sure if the image terrain bender gives is ok though, as irregardless of settings I seem to get some very very "spiky" height map based terrains in unity

Would be good to get a more tried and tested asc to raster software but have really struggled to find anything other than arc gis which I can't seem to get to work properly

It's been a while since I looked into any sort of ground data, but isn't .ASC simply an ASCII text file?  I would think that most terrain programs should be able to read/open/render that terrain.  Perhaps the spiky height map is due to bad data in that file??

I don't use such software, nor am I a course designer.  Therefore, I don't know exactly what you need/want the software to do (aside from the height map).  A web search return one very interesting result, as well as couple others that might help:

TERRAIN FORGE ** cough, cough **  (maybe you need to have a licence or something to log in???):

Cheers Armand, cant beleive I never managed to find QGIS, its exactly what I was after. Ive been messing about with, what I find, the incredibly frustrating ARC GIS, converting to datatsets and all sorts, and various others, when QGUS is easy quick and gives exactly what I wanted. Much appreciated

U.K. .asc format imports perfectly into terrain forge. Let me know if you need this doing
