I won't lie, i don't like Jack as much as Norman as a designer. I really don't believe good playing ability has anything to do with good design

You're right. Some of the classic old world designs were created by folks who probably never made it as a pro golfer. I good understanding of the game helps, as this will help you when planning out holes and where all the trouble and hazards need to be and what sort of challenge your course offers.
