Mike has just indicated they'd moved internally to 4.5.x, so no need to downgrade.

Is course forge ready to use? Or is it still in testing mode?

It's still in testing mode (for want of choosing another wording).
There are some issues the guys want to address still.

There are a few here - the environmental series in particular looks good for what you wish. I haven't done them personally but a few others here have and recommend them. If you do the part 1 of the environmental series (I link to only the 1st of 3 parts from memory), don't worry too much if you don't understand section 1 as normal maps are a bit more complicated and aren't important to get going.
Unity can overwhelm the beginner, but that's from the number of features it has rather than the difficulty of each feature. You'll only need to know about 2% of Unity offers (a very nominal guess) to design a course, and you can be up to speed with that 2% very quickly. Also you might like to check out the TerrainStarter tool that creates a golf-course-ready terrain in two clicks.
PP will be updating their tutorials in the future too.

Will Course Forge be this tricky to use?

No - CourseForge comes with ground textures and a tree library, eliminating the need to do what you have done. There is no trickery in the 15 minute hole creation video Mike did. The hardest part of doing a course is the artistic part: where to place things to make the course look nice. The tools to do so are so simple they're actually quite boring: draw tee box shape, draw next tee box shape, ...

The Layer Library is a great part of Course Forge. In my eyes it's an absolute essential part of the process, and once mastered, can aid in creating ANY course. The ability to re-use textures in future course designs or improve existing ones with minimal fuss. Trial and error is easily accomplished too, allowing you to tweak things and see instant results. It's a seriously under-estimated part of CF...

There was a video showing how to use Course Forge but it has been reduced to a 5 minute quick look. I would like to view it again but it seems to have been removed.

Mike or anyone in the know..is it necessary that we upgrade to Unity 4.5? The reason I ask is that version of Unity has acted funny on my computer in the past. Is 4.3.4 OK for CF presently and in the future?

K,
I think you should be OK with that for now, but I think I have seen mention of Unity 5 being catered for down the development road, so I guess as Unity continues to upgrade, PP are keen to follow and keep up with up to date versions.
