Stroke Index

Best Answer Mike Jones , 08 November 2016 - 04:50 PM

Sorry I missed the update from Brendan, yes I will do a tutorial but obviously it's better to do it as you go along as it's a lot less work in the long run.

Basically the way to do it is:

*Delete one entire set of tees on one hole and make a note of the stroke index they had.

*Then go to the hole that should have the stroke index of the tees you just deleted. Make a note of the stroke index on the tees and then change their stroke index to the one you want.

*Go to the hole that should have the stroke index of the tees you just changed and change the stroke index to the correct one.

*Rinse and repeat until all holes are done.

I write them down!

I like to go by the general guideline used on US courses which is to place all the odd numbers on one nine (usually the front) and all the even numbers on the other nine. That's a nice way of distributing the indexes evenly and it is also a little easier to keep track of them too.

Ive got a spreadsheet which can calculate indexes if anyone struggles. It basically follows the advised conventions of odd indexes on longest 9, even on the shorter.

Also takes into account length of approach shots and the remaining shots to acheive GIR, based on an average drive length to avoid pars 5s always being the hardest indexes etc

During any BETA process on OGT, or for any course where designers have yardages and pars all decided then happy to run the numbers on it, just ask.

Ive back tested it against many real courses indexes and it comes out pretty close for the most part. Obviously there are many holes where its not just yardage and hazards etc will effect the index, but will at least give some workable indexes as a starting point.

John, are you willing to share that spreadsheet or are you offering your services for calculating the indices for user-designed courses?  If the former, I'd be interested.   ;)

Thanks, John.  I'm not authorized to view that forum .... Is that the beta testing courses thread?  I have not signed up for that.  I do recall seeing your list of courses with the rating/slope.  Is that what was linked?  Anyway, I'll have to dig around more at OGT!
