This is a real course with Lidar heightmap, so I was limited
in that regard,but I still refer to the Tom Doak
book recommended by you for inspiration
and evilness.

I do have shadows in game but they are very light.
Should I have Hard Shadows on in Unity? I have
Hard and Soft shadows selected. Is there a transparency
slider I missed somewhere?
I also have a skybox, should I remove it and just
use Directional light, and let the game choose the sky?

Skybox is okay - it's only visible in dynamic light OFF mode. Although it does look a little blurry in your screen cap (1024 sides?)
There is a Shadow Strength Slider below your Shadow Type selection in the Directional Light settings. I usually set it to 0.75 with Soft Shadows. Hard shadows might be a bit easier on performance, but soft shadows look better. I think that when dyna light is ON, all of this will be done procedurally anyway.
I think Mike was exclusively commenting regarding your image. Without shadows it looks flat and uniform and loses a lot of depth - that was the first thing I noticed about it, too. But since this is not the first episode of shadow-denial from you, I have given up on reminding you about this detail. There clearly must be a good reason why you won't set up your umbrage once at the start and then keep it on always. That reason keeps eluding me, but I'm sure it is excellent.

Ahh, thanks K11, the Strength slider.
My old rig would bog down Unity with shadows on
so I would turn them off when working and inevitably
forget to turn them on when capturing; old habits die hard,
but I will now leave them on for your future viewing pleasure.

I know this isn't the correct forum for asking about
shadows; but, a couple more questions here if I may.
My shadows now look correct in game but
they only start showing as I get say 75 yds
closer to the trees, is this normal? Or can they
be made to stay on continuously, and where is that
setting? I should know this, but there seems to be a
shadow on that portion of my old brain at the moment.

Shadow distance is set in the game. Your tree LOD might also be a factor - as soon as trees morph into billboards, they do not cast shadows any more.
