I had emailed the Scottish government to ascertain when they proposed to make Lidar data in Scotland available to the public. I have pasted in the email response to this below.

My question is what data I am specifically looking for? Is it DTM or DSM and I see options of 2 metre data, 1 metre data and 50cm data.I was only really looking for the data for the South Ayrshire where i play on a few of the local courses and would've preferred the option of just that general area. But this is the response to asking when it's available.....

Morning Barry

Thank you for your email.

As Colin mentioned we are in the process of making this data available to the public as Open Data. The data hosting infrastructure specification has been drafted and agreed and is currently with our procurement team prior to tendering process.

The current process for LiDAR data supply is for yourself (Barry) to supply the Scottish Government a hard drive, we then copy the data and send you back the hard drive. Due to the file sizes of the LiDAR data we require a 2TB hard drive for each dataset.

Happy to discuss if you to give me a call.

Thanks

Alan

You would want the DTM data or bare earth data, the DSM includes trees and buildings.  I would think 1 meter data is what would run the best in a unity terrain.  The 50 centimeter data would be too dense, too many points.  If required to provide storage for 2 TerraBytes they must be sending large swaths of land data.  Definitely need to learn to crop lidar data in the meantime.  Hope it comes out soon.

Hope this helps.

Yeah, at 2 TB I wonder how many square miles (or kilometres in this case) that is?

Thanks for that information Robert.

It looks like they are offering me the whole of Scotland. I think i will just wait until its just generally relaeased to the public and download the chunk im looking for. Hopefully, not too long to wait!

Fingers crossed its out soon I've been gagging for some scottish LIDAR data for ages.  Better not tell them I've moved to England incase it refuses to let me download any of it.

They may take our LIDAR data, but they'll never take our freedom!
