Good to see similar thoughts... and yes, I have seen a few fairways where the hardness has seen my Tee shot begin on one side of the fairway and roll 50yds and race across the rough into a waiting hazard.

This is where the Designer could make things interesting....

On those fairways, he could easily see this happen, through the slope and his design. He could therefore ensure the lower parts of the fairway are not as hard as the higher parts, and thus induce a little more 'Course Knowledge' into his design. If the Designer chooses to make it known, then we can all 'gear up' on our Course Notes and make our own decisions out there, based on the Course and Conditions.

As Taragor states.. it isn't always something you can plan for.... or feel justified when missing the snap. You take the penalty of the missed snap ie direction..... should you also endure the reasoning of an impact penalty, when the pin is on the edge of the green?

Again, this is but a suggestion... adding the ability to dampen IMPACT, allows the designer to ensure his creation takes into account other factors, such as possible water or OB areas that can see your shot PING into oblivion.

It doesn't simply have to be used on areas around Greens either... imagine being able to control central parts of fairways, where possible water may actually lay on the fairway. Not all parts of a fairway should react the same...

I used to do this in Custom Play Golf where a). there was no terrain type hierarchy B). terrain types could overlap c). you could use something called an overlay terrain.

So I would overlay a terrain in several places on a green with slightly more resistance to roll to simulate damp patches here and there. This wasn't to overcome a game issue, rather to create a more  interesting experience in certain situations. However, it's easy to see how it could be applied in your suggestion.

To my friend Ian,  very interesting indeed. Now, If I could build a course that could ONLY be played in inclement weather, I think I could just make little ponds in the fairway right now? I wonder if that would look and play cool? Not exactly what you are talking about, I know but interesting.  Hmmmm

I'm going to experiment but I wonder if I could make the excess water build up in a certain area of the fairway, shallow enough that the ball could roll thru it and splash up some water? Of course, I'm sure most courses do have drainage but it sounds interesting to me..

In the meantime, can we order up some rain gear in the Pro Shop? ;)

(1)  Here you go but it was never commented upon.  http://www.perfectpa...dness-settings/  IMO the present setting of 'Hard' FW should only be used on the appropriate course and yet there is a case for more latitude for tournament settings than currently exist.

(2)  Correct me if I am wrong but tounament setups just have to go with easy/normal/hard pin settings (I think) but going back to Links you could select individual pins - way better IMO.

Do not hold me to this but I think OGT wants course designers to provide a minimum of 3 hole locations on each green.  Some course designers provide 6 hole or more. So tournament admins at OGT can select any pin location provided through the API.  So tournament directors can use any pin location provided by the designer.
