Our men and woman serving overseas shouldn't have to pay diddly to come back home. Another round of boos for United.

When all this broke about United and other airlines, and the shoddy way they treat paid-up customers, I felt amazed that not one airline decided to get a PR win from the situation.
My idea would be that the airline actually leave 6 to 8 seats unsold. If they do not have personnel or others who they wish to fit into a flight, then offer these seats on a purely standby basis to military personnel and first responders along with hard-working medical staff, all of whom would love the chance to visit family on the rare occasions that they are not keeping us safe from harm.

It looks like United Airlines should have made 11 changes to improve their customer service. It looks like his total weight was not over and other airlines were flexible enough to not charge him for one overweight bag. More deserved bad press United.
I like worrybirdie's idea to leave a few empty seats to use for military standby.
