I remember this being discussed some time ago, but all my searches turned up nada.  So...

What are the differences between the two balls?  I remember there was a distance difference,
but for the life of me I can remember what it is.

I knew there was an old thread about the balls and I found I post I made at the time after some less than scientific testing, lol.

I've just done quick comparison with both balls (nothing overly scientific, just a quick test), using a Beginner 3C player, both shots hit with Driver at 0MPH wind on Normal firmness. Shot hit at 100% with Path, Clubface and Axis all 0 degrees.

Avant Ball

Carry = 273yds

Total = 302yds

Ball Speed = 167

Caliber Ball

Carry = 257yds

Total = 288yds

Ball Speed = 159

Take what you will from these findings.

No idea if these figures still hold true after all the in game changes since May 2016, but I guess if I can do this simple test, anyone who wants to know the difference can do the same.

I do remember the Caliber has less dispersion for off straight hits and doesn't stray off line as the same shot hit with an Avant ball.

;)

I use caliber and the trade off is acceptable to me, the only downside to a caliber ball is when you are playing courses with many long par 4's, winged foot is tough going, you really have to hit exceptional long irons or woods to sniff a bird.  You also give up eagle chances on certain par 5's   It's a pretty good trade off and seems to work, both balls have plus and minuses that are very well balanced.

I don't know how anyone knows what ball they are using when its the same looking ball no matter which one you choose. Don't believe me? Switch balls and while in the game, zoom in on your ball. No difference from one or the other.

Larry,

Appreciate what you're saying about the graphic being more or less the same for both, but it is quite simple to know which ball you're playing.

In the Players setup screens, choose Balls and then select which ball you want to use. One is called OnCore Avant and the other OnCore Caliber. Whichever one you have selected is the ball you will be using. It's not really rocket science.

I use Avant and hit 3/4 shots if more accuracy needed for tight fairways/small greens. Can't be sure - not done rigorous tests - but I sense that is more forgiving than using Caliber at 100%. Not so easy to hit 3/4 shots, of course, (using RTS-M) but prob better to fall short than go L or R. Must do some proper research on this.

I think you should go with the caliber and try to hit around 100% on normal shots. Much easier to determine your shot power/distance control that way. I don't know, but if i want to play an 80% shot, it's really hard to dial that in and to foresee the rollout of the ball as well. If i hit around 100% i know the distances and what the ball does after impact with the ground pretty accurate.

Caliber gives you a little more right/left leeway but you would still be quite a bit longer if you hit it 100% instead of hitting the Avant 75%.
