Tried to search for some info on speedtrees but.....?

Where can i get some different looking  trees than the stock ones,

Gumtrees

Willows

 Varieties  of palm trees

Bamboo

etc etc

would like to take a look at many varieties so i can pick and choose, probably asking for too much?

Thanks

Gum trees and willows are available at the speedtree store.  The modeler can be used to optimize the basic speedtrees down to between 1800-3000 on poly count by thinning leaves and reducing the number of sides of trunks and branches from say 16 to 8.  But if you notice the Hero trees can be as much as 20,000 polys.

If you never claimed it I'm sure it's still there.  They were supposed to have enough coupons for everbody over here.  You get about 10 trees using the coupon.  Besides that, I believe if you rent the Modeler for $19.00 a month, you get the pack of 5 or so more starter-pack trees thrown in.  Plus, a free batch of whatever they have offered each month to get you to pay one more month.  You get your coupon code through the Social.perfectparallel site, using the same user name as here because that's what the coupon code is stored under.

Slice, I told you wrong.  It's been a while since I downloaded Speedtrees.  They should be in your Standard

Assets/Environment/Speedtree/Course Forge folder.   If they're not maybe some other members can help out and direct you how to get

them.  Here's the free 3 or 4 free trees you also get.

I realize this is a somewhat old thread, but I have exactly the same original question (well, sort of). My version: Are there any free or cheap alternatives to Speedtree that will actually work in CF and JNPG?

$40 for one tree is more than a little pricey. It's more than the price of the game! I've searched around these forums quite a bit, and there's lots of very technical advice about very technical issues, but I just would like trees that look decent and work (can be imported/don't cause issues). I'm neither an artist nor a game designer.

Schmidt61059, you have exactly 4 options.

  1. Limit yourself to the available default trees (or design a course without trees)
  2. Invest 19.95$/month into the Speedtree Modeller for Unity to edit and create your own trees. This is a monthly fee, you can quit after a month if you work quickly - on a truly beastly and unser-unfriendly bit of software. As a bonus, doing this will also unlock a string of tree bonus packs with additional (usually very poor quality) models, which you can download as well.
  3. You can create a Unity tree and design it in the Unity tree editor. My understanding, however, ist this is an outdated technology that is not fully supported by Unity anymore. And like the Speedtree editor, this requires advanced skills which you profess not having.
  4. Or you can pick out trees from existing user-made golf courses and PM the designers, asking for them to share them with you. I'm not quite clear if they are legally allowed to that, though.

It's not a satisfactory situation, I'm afraid. Truth is, you are on your own and there is no helpful solution at all to this particular problem. Sorry.

Thanks(?) I was afraid that was the case. Oh, well, perhaps one stupid maple really is worth $39.99. I'm really just doing this for my own purposes. Doubt I will ever get anything good enough for public consumption, but I would like it to look decent for me.

This really kinda b lows in general. I hope that when/if there is JNPG2 that CF will have a better set of assets.

Don't count on better tree assets in JNPG and CF2 - PP have basically outsourced all their tree requirements to Speedtree.

You do with your time and your money whatever you want, schmidt61059, but clubcaptain has a point: One single tree will definitely NOT make a difference. You need at least 4 different kinds of trees and 3 different kinds of bushes (bushes are even more of a problem than trees) to create a satisfactory vegetation (a minimal one, the more the better anyway). And not only that, you would need to take them into the modeller software to create a few different models of each version, to avoid getting a very repetitive "Clone Army" look.

I hate to pile it on, but the harsh truth is that the tree situation around here is very dire*), with no help in sight. As for doing a course just for yourself, again, that is your prerogative, but do not sell yourself short before you've got something to show. Once you've finished your private little course, you might as well invite others onto it. Believe me: If you build it, they will come.

*) Addendum: And that is not PP's fault, btw. Nothing they can do about the pervasive specialisation and commercialisation in IT. They lack resources as it is and the internet is not free anymore, good things cost money, can't be helped.

I got the free ones a few years back and have since changed computers and my Speed trees are gone. The site no longer allows me to get a coupon. Do I have to spend the 70 bucks to get the free trees?

As you have already used the speedtree coupon then you will have created an account at the speedtree web site.  So you do not need the coupon code and  anything obtained from speedtree should be available for download.

Go to www.speedtree.com.     On the top menu LOG IN to speeedtree with the details you originally used ( it may have already remembered you )

click on MY ACCOUNT then click on DOWNLOADS and you should have your free speedtrees available for download

I agree that this situation is really bad. Speedtree needs a 2 tier pricing system, one for profit making developers, and one for personal or non-profit use.
