Well, I've finally got Unity installed on my computer today, and had a little play with the tree editing. I have always loved trees, and painted and drawn a fair few in my time!

I can easily see me getting the urge to create many for the Course Forge, as I did with skies for Links 2003. This tree editor seems very flexible, especially with the ability to add custom bark and leaf textures. :)

I installed Unity shortly after the opening of the original PP Forums.

I have the Unity 3.5.7f6 version and didn't install the 5.0(?) since Andrew posted that the Course Forge was only using that version and they had not tested it with the most recent one yet.

I asked him if CF will be using the most current Unity but never received a reply.

What are you guys running?  The older one or the most current and what do you think I should do?

Thanks Daz.  There is no update option in the Unity engine I have. Should I just delete this version and install the free 4.1.12f1 or will it just over-install the version I have?

When I had v3, when I fired it up it advised me there was a newer version available. I downloaded v4 as a stand alone, not as an update.

Un-installed v3 and then installed v4.

I like it! Around 3k is the optimum number of 'tris' per tree, you can go a little higher but not by too much or performance will start to suffer if you plant a lot of them.

Fellow bark scratchers, lol

Came across a free terrain asset pack over on the Unity website for download (43.9MB)

This is a collection of assets made by Unity Technologies and our wonderful community. It contains: 12 trees, 12 bushes, 6 grass types and 22 terrain textures. They are all configured correctly for use with Unity's terrain engine - just import them into your project and watch your world come alive!

Might be fun to have a play with.

Useful info! ;)

It will be interesting to see how much performance does suffer when designers start to push the envelope of what is possible within Unity and Course Forge. I remember some of the later course releases on Links 2003 grinding some people's computers to a standstill with their rendering times!

It could be that the computer specs required a year or two from now may far exceed those needed initially (unless the Course Forge puts a cap on certain numbers or parameters, and that would only limit future development anyway).

Why do my leaves turn into white blocks when I fiddle with a downloaded tree. I can't get my leaves back even with Ctrl-z

I remember reading about Unity and it's tree/terrain frame rate issues, up to 4.5 no fix. I'm assuming it's been fixed by now? Or is there something we should be doing when the time comes?  No idea if that has anything to do with the leaves issue.
