Is there a general consensus among designers as to how to handle the excess terrain around the golf course.  DO you leave the Satellite Image, do you paint a texture over it all, or do you paint texture and populate with 2P Trees, which I guess could slow down FPS.

I know many of you hae played a lot of the courses, I haven't played but a couple, newbie, so I haven't seen what is standard.  Does it take away from the course to leave the rest of the area void of trees?

Thanks for your help, putting final touches on first course design.

I like to add a second, outer terrain and then raise that around the outside of the main one. I can use this to make hills or mountains, and it will also block out any sight lines out to the "edge of nowhere". I also will make liberal use of the 2P trees.

The best designers blend the surroundings seamlessly into the course to keep the immersive feeling. Unfortunately, producers of many of the real courses on JNPG simply stop work at the edge of the outer holes of the course and leave it devoid of planting or scenery, without adding a second mesh (unlike M Rose states above).

If the course is surrounded by houses or buildings or roads, I leave the sat image.  Not much point doing a real course and putting trees where a house is meant to stand just because some may find the sat image unappealing.

How do you add the outer (second) terrain.

Here is a very quick video that may help.

Instead of setting the tiling at 15, try something like 50

since it's so far away. you can also use say a 512 texture,

instead of 1024 or higher, again because of the distance.

Mike did do a couple of videos about this in beta and hopefully

he will add those to the tutorials at some point.

I think I said "basically" at least 5 times...sheeesh...to much vino.
