This has probably been covered before but I must ask just what the point of realistic greens are ?

If there is any actual point to them, why do the green grids not reflect the change from that of the original course design ? The only greens I have ever played on that kick a ball off at 60 degree angles are those that have been neglected over a long period of time.

I don't see how they are at all realistic as 99.9% of greens will run smooth short of debris blowing on (leaves, twigs etc....)

Umm.. indeed it has been covered!   ;)

You asked this exact question in February 2018

http://www.perfectpa...alistic +greens

Can someone please explain what realistic greens actually are ?

Perfect greens are obvious. When I watch a PGA tournament or the like, the greens are perfect. They have to be or the players would leave. Bumpy greens are obvious because I have played a few municipal courses where they are just that. Not maintained properly, pitch marks not repaired, bits of dirt, leaves, twigs and the odd mole hill.

But what is a realistic green ? By what is it measured ? What is the standard ? And who decided what the standard was ?

On top of this, why does the green grid not reflect what the green is doing ? Real golf allows us to read a green even if it is bumpy but the green grid on here reflects only the perfect option.

Can we either get rid of the realistic option or at least have a green grid that gives us a fighting chance ?

I gave you some links for more reading;

Here are 2 forum links for you to check out that have lots of comments on this subject and are a good starting point for your research.

...and there were 3 pages of discussion about the topic in that thread.
Nothing has changed since then.

Forgetful I guess.

I still don't get them though. Anything beyond 5 or 6 feet is "hope and pray" !! Might as well putt blindfold.

Luckily for those that don't like realistic greens there's a setting called perfect greens for you to use.

A high percentage of putts that miss IRL are missed because the putting surfaces are not perfect. Greens are made up of millions of blades of grass which do not like to confirm to exact specifications. There is no way to read these imperfecttions and grass blade differences as they are so small as to be invisible to the naked eye.

Some PGA tour venues have better greens than others but you can bet that as soon as two or three groups of players and caddies have walked over them there will be slight changes in the surface which we simulate with our realistic greens setting. It may not be a perfect implementation (pun intended :D ) but it more closely resembles the real life putting experience than the 'perfect' green setting.

Many will disagree but that's the nature of online gaming - some people would prefer it just be a complete test of skill with no wind variations or realistic greens so that their charts and calculations work out perfectly every time but that is not a vision we share. We do give you the option to turn the wind off and play with perfect greens if you like but if you're playing in official tournaments we will set them up as close to a real life experience as we can.

This pretty much sums it up in my opinion.  I can see both sides of the preferences.  Glad we have the option to cater to both viewpoints.

I personally lean more towards the sim/imperfect world and I only play on realistic greens.

Doesn't matter, this is were the luxury of a PC game shines.  More options the better.  Don't prefer it, don't use it.  Easy game.
