Hello guys.

I thought I would share with you a great set of video tutorials on creating in heightmaps, painting textures, planting trees & grass and adding finishing touches to your terrains in Unity. Most of the techniques in the tutorials would probably be seen as fairly basic, but I think they could be a great help for people starting out with Unity having never used it before.

All of the stuff covered in the tutorials appears to be relevant to the creation of golf courses in Unity. This may help people get a head start on creating their golf courses before Course Forge is released and hopefully familiarise people with the Unity interface.

If you have any other Unity learning resources please share them here - I'm sure they will help people. Perhaps we can build a collection of good resources for people wanting to start the quest of designing golf courses in Unity/Course Forge.

I'm really confused here. I thought that 3dUnity was the "Game Engine" and CF was the course architect?

Well, sort of... you will require Unity for:

- Terrain shaping/adjustments (even when importing a terrain mesh, you will need to smooth out rough patches)

- Water (I don't think the Forge will provide any water features)

- Vegetation (Grass, bushes, trees etc)

- And everything else that is around the golf course.

Bottom line: There's a bit of Unity involved here and there and the CourseForge will not cover a 100% of your course design needs. Some of the features we saw in the hole creation video, such as the terrain brushes and tree planting brush, are Unity features.

At least that's how I see it.

Thank you Kablammo, seems like one big, huge hassle to me.. Using basically 2 course architects, wow... Oh well.. Life goes on...

No biggie. It's 2 in 1, really, not 2 different things at all - You work with Unity, that's the one app you click to open, and inside of it, you'll have the CourseForge to do 90% of the job. But as Lukas correctly suggested with his thread, you need to learn how to do a bit of Unity first. Which is as well, seeing as you won't be able to use the CourseForge without it.

Think of it this way: Unity 3D is to Course Forge as MacDonalds is to BigMac & Fries: You've gotta enter the Restaurant before you can eat your meal. Not that much of a hassle, really.

Thanks for the link..those are great tutorials.  Wil definitely be referring back to these.  I am slowly but surely getting more confortable in Unity.  Blender on the other hand..yikes.

This may not be the right place to ask, but here goes..does anyone know if any default trees, bushes, etc. will be included with CF?  Mike if you are lurking could you weigh in?  I dloaded the add on package Dazmaniac posted here a few weeks ago, plus I have gotten pretty good at creating my own trees.  However,  I think the more tree/vegatation options we have the more creative we can be.

That depends on how much time you spend sitting in front of the computer designing courses. ;)

He makes it look so easy on those videos, but I am sure that it will take a lot of learning (especially for my old brain cells). You youngsters (anyone under 60) should learn it in next to no time :)

I'm 75 and already thinking it is beyond me.....and I used to be a computer/TV expert and the last 15 years went by so fast I couldn't keep up.

Just give it a shot, guys. Don't expect everything to fall into place right away - it won't! - and simply tackle one issue after next. Go to YouTube for Tuts, ask Google questions starting with "Unity 3D.....?", ask anybody around here. It's a full project, requiring time and effort, but not out of anybody's reach. You'll get there. If I can do it, 99.94% of mankind can do it better!

(Currently playing around with self-made seamless textures. I Sure could use that CourseForge right about now...)

Hey guys just checking out the tutorials and it's not too bad.  Be interested to know how much of Unity and the CF plugin have the same functionality, for example draw lines, applying textures, planting tools.

I know it may not be possible to answer but *what* exactly is in CF and what has to be done in Unity?  For example do we have to create collisions objects, prefabs, know how to do lighting, texture sets, 512 or 1024.  It appears this is an amazing tool to make some pretty pictures but little in the way of direction/answers for people to understand what this tool can and won't do.  Sorry if that seems rude.  Any chance of any screen shots of your in progress alpha so we know what is/isn't in the Unity plugin?

WIthout a real PC competitor this could totally rock! and I hope it's a success  :D
