Both PP & HBstudio have shown that they are willing to sell the SW for 50$ if that's what the market price is.
Right now it's not.
I have tested the PG sim version for a while now with a GC2 and it works really well. Will be interesting to see what the final release looks like and what's included.

Where exactly are people seeing a price of $249/year?

$249 a year is not bad. If you can buy a launch monitor, you can probably buy simulator software that boils down to around 20 bucks a month. I'd much rather do that then spend 1k up front for something that may change in a few years. Plus in my opinion the other game does not even compare to PG. As soon as my gc2 gets here I will happily be playing this game in my garage, as well as dabble into course forge and recreate some local courses! Well done PP. This game looks and feels great!

Driver,
You will love it. Testers are having a blast playing PG. We've been playing tourney rounds, pickup matches, skins, team alternate shots, and close to pin tourneys. Multiplayer is awesome. Tournament rounds can be played multiplayer and all players will get scores and stats to OGT site. Shots launched practically the same time for all players.
Physics and ball flight are very good. Carry yardages are within 1-2 yards of GC2. The putting is very realistic and a lot of fun. Hit a .8 offline on GC2 and you'll miss a 7 footer by a hair.

zmax, no offense but I have to ask what is your handicap? From the last video it looked like you hit a lot of skunky shots. Were those results fair and accurate representations of your swings? The sim to PG premise falls apart if the results don't translate 100% of the time.
No offense taken. I'm a 10 handicap. My biggest problem when playing in my basement is my driver due to relatively low ceiling. Its gets in my head. Outside, my driver is my best club. I don't hit it far. 220-240 carry is what I normally do outside. Keep it in the fairway and rely on my short game is how I break 80 5 times this Summer and 5 times last summer.
Having said that, My scores on sim test tournament so far shows me at around 10 over on avg, which lines up with my real handicap. Those results are fair and very accurate. Feel free to watch all my videos and come over to OGT and look at leaderboards and stats.
If you have a GC2, spend the $20 and try PG and see for yourself what others are raving about. The GC2 as you know, is well know to be very accurate LM. Perhaps the most accurate LM for indoor use. PG represents the my ball flight very accurately.

I can certainly back up what Zmax says. Im new to PG and a pure Sim player, coming over from Optishot once I bought my GC2. PG is as true a representation of both what GC2 shows, and in turn what my real life game is like.
In terms of nearly all aspects what would happen in real life, pretty much happens on PG. Obviously still a work in progress, but in the short time weve been using GC2 with the software it impossible not to be very impressed.
I again will second exactly as above, if you own a Gc2 it will be the best $20 youll ever spend
