Inspired by Gary's beautiful holes at Cypress Point, I've been reading up on the course and its creation. Apparently, the job of designing and building the course was originally given to Seth Raynor (long-time associate of C.B. Macdonald), who produced the original routing but died before construction could begin. After Raynor's death, Alister MacKenzie was commissioned to build the course, but it's not clear how much of CP is an original MacKenzie design and how much it followed Raynor's original routing. In most accounts, Raynor is not even mentioned as contributing to the course, but there was apparently an early routing map from Raynor that is similar in many ways to MacKenzie's final design, and photos from before Raynor's death show stakes for tees and greens on several of the back 9 seaside holes that suggest that MacKenzie did pay attention to Raynor's original routing - even though full routing credit is usually given to MacKenzie alone. (Check out the discussion of these controversies on golfclubatlas.com if you want to dig deeper into the history of the creation of CP.)
The more I learn about CP, the more interesting this course becomes. Gary, I hope your work on CP goes smoothly and proves to be both enjoyable and rewarding.
