Thanks Joe...that's kinda weird but good to know. I'll try "reloading" it.

I have issues with everything being blurry like if I am looking at the entire USA,  I have to zoom in to a few hundred feet before it clears up.

No biggy, just curious why mine doesn't look like Joes from the start. I can zoom in perfectly though.

Mine is the same way.  Also the same version.. And I tried a few different ones  with the same result.

Mine is the same as well.  But I'm still (generally) able to get overheads from the courses I've tried.   Again, I sometimes use Google Maps to find the course and then select "Google Satellite" to download the images.  I'll make and then post a video; maybe it will help....

Heres my issue, for an example: In the first pic, this is as far as I can pull out and see clearly.

But to even draw a rectangle around it, I have to pull out farther, see 2nd pic.

Now, it's no biggy for me right now as I am just exploring but I have to get past this sooner or later..

OK .... here is a video how to deal with having to zoom out to select the entire area.  I don't have any commentary/sound for this, and there are times when I wait a bit for downloads to occur (although I usually go off and scout around other areas).  It's about 16-17 minutes long.  If that is too long, you might want to speed up the playback:

I'm having a different issue. When I use Wilbur and do a save as my saved surface png file is just white with a blue line at the bottom. Followed all the steps. I'm not sure what I am doing wrong. Anyone else have this issue?

I've run across a couple of places that don't seem to have Google Satellite images and get a completely grey JPG when I've tried to download the images.  One area, I was only able to get most of the course, but the SE (lower right) corner didn't have images:

In such cases, I think you will have rely on Bing or try and of the other satellite options from within SAS Planet.  Obviously, if you can see it in SAS Planet, you should be able to download it.  If you don't see it, you may not be able to download the images.

Are you sure you're saving it as a .PNG Surface? If so then I am in the dark.

Yes, saving it as a PNG surface file in GlobalMapper. It loads into Wilbur and looks good just when saving it I have this problem. I've looked at Wilburs webpage (not a lot there) but there was a suggestion that I tried but really didn't think that would help. It didn't. I'm looking for alternative software at this moment. I'll update when I've figured it out

I believe the terrain file you load into Wilber has "no-data" areas, so it doesn't create a good surface "png". Here are the steps to correct the problem.

In Global Mapper:

1. With the "Triangulated Grid" selected, right click on the cross hatch selection area of the image.
2. Select "Calculate Elevation/Slope Stats for Selected Area/Lines..."
3. Right down the Max and Min elevations from the window that is displayed.

In Wilber

1. From the menu select Surface->Find Min/Max
2. If the min shows -32768.0, then the loaded terrain contains no-data areas.
3. From the menu select "Filter->Fill->Replace"
4. Set "Base Value" to -32768.0 and "New Value" to the Min from Global Mapper
5. Press "OK" and the terrain should now be various colors.
6. Save it as a surface PNG as normal  and you can then continue to convert it to a ".raw" file

Hope this helps.

While I didn't have to do this it definitely pointed me in the right direction. When I started to follow your directions I noticed a small section of the triangulated grid was outside of my data points and must have caused the "no data" problem. I deleted and then recreated it so that it was within the boundaries.

Thanks for the help!!!!

Joe,

Where do I found those LIDAR .las file to generate the triangulated elevation grid 1 file. Because in the tutorial #2 you talk about LIDAR map and you use 4 .LAS files for generate that file?

Because if I understand, whit out the .las LIDAR files I won't be able to do what you are showing with your 3 tutorials.

Thanks

I got my lidar from http://www.dnr.state...idar/index.html all the files that Minnesota uses is in .LAS and .LAZ format. Laz is pretty much a zipped up las file so it is much smaller. That is the only format I know how to work with so I figured i'd show others how I do it. I'm sure other states have to use this Lidar file type as well but I have no idea which ones.

Most of the USGS Earth Explorer LIDAR data is also in .LAS format too

Joe,

Thanks for the tutorials. I originally hit an impasse with Terrain Forge for getting usable Lidar into Unity for Kiawah. Last night, following your tutorials, I am now tweaking my Kiawah_Lidar version and am ecstatic.

All of my Lidar has come from USGS and is typically "unclassified" and not a true surface representation. Do you have any tips on reducing vegetation in Global Mapper? Or do you not recommend this?

I removed points with Global Mappers auto processes. I could then fill in gaps with Larrys paint fill in Wilbur and basically "flatten" all vegetation.

It can be manually done in Unity as well. Just wanted to know if you had done this for any other courses. Jealous of Minnesota and their commitment to producing good Lidar.

When you load the lidar data, the second window (Lidar Load Options) has a section for selecting the types to import. I check mark "Ground" and "Water". I believe this gives you the best shot at getting accurate base elevation data. In Joe's video, he only had "Ground" check marked.

For most US states, that works fine. However, for North Carolina, I also have to check "Created, never classified" or GMapper won't load the data at all. When it is check marked, it loads the data, but I can't get an overlay on top of the "Triangulated Elevation Grid". Still haven't figured this one out.
