Just a quick tip for SAS Planet - if you're using Google Maps (Satellite), go into Settings and set the map version to 711.  Fixed all my resolution issues.

Newest Map version now 718

Nice find.  I'd like to know where the magic number comes from.  I found 711 on a forum somewhere.

Nothing comes up when I click data - might be something to do with me getting redirected to google.com.au from plain old google.com.  Good to see the map version can be found without forum hunting though.

Sweet, that works.  If only the trial Global Mapper allowed exporting, there'd be even more action on the course front.

So how many of the programs necessary to this process require you to subscribe?

SAS Planet and Wilbur are free, Photoshop isn't but GIMP might be a suitable replacement...I wish there was some sort of short term subscription for Global Mapper.

Meaning Global Mapper, which is an essential part of the process, requires a long term subscription? Just trying to be clear.

It requires emptying your wallet   :P   I think the base program + lidar module is getting up towards $1k.  No sub, just a purchase.  That's why I wish there was a short term subscription.

If you have a specific course in mind someone like Larrykuh is open to creating heightmaps, he has Global Mapper and Terraland I believe.  If you can give him a head start by getting the SAS Planet imagery and lidar source he'd probably be happy to help.

Who knows, Terrain Forge might not be that useful and we'll have to rely on others anyway.

Wish I'd known that sooner. I wouldn't have wasted so much time trying to get SAS to work (which I think I was getting close to). Guess I'll just wait and hope for TF.

Global Mapper is prohibitively expensive, and as I said there's no subscription model, but this is the internet...perhaps there are other ways to try it out.  Shareware or something.

As for TF it might be time to move on.  It sounds like it won't exactly be a good substitute for GM in these tutorials.

I hope you're wrong. It would be a pretty sad thing for those of us who would like the ability to build real courses from start to finish.

I wanted to be able to do the process from start to finish because there aren't many designers from the Southern Hemisphere, and I didn't want to harass people to do it for me.

A lot of the great American courses have been done or have been tagged for development.  Was there one in particular you wanted to see made, or are you looking to make lesser known local tracks?

You'd have to hire a plane/drone and scan the area yourself.  It just hasn't been done.
