This morning I watched Justin Thomas hack his way to a 9 on the par 4 6th hole. It took him 4 swings to get it out of the deep rough and they actually couldn't find his 3rd shot so he had to drop with a penalty stroke. His second swing went backwards. I think a couple of changes need to be made to JNPG2 so that links courses like Royal Birkdale can play more like the real ones. First the penalty from deep rough has to be more punitive. Secondly there should be collision properties added to tall grasses and bushes. For example on the Royal Troon course there are no collision properties for the gorse bushes. As it is now the only defence for links courses in JNPG is the pot bunker.
Royal Birkdale released just in time for the Open!

@slouis: 110% agree
This has long been a problem with PG IMO.
There simply has never been enough penalty for being off from where you should be.
Flipped around and said another way, it's detracting from the value of smart course management.

I agree to a point. Bad swings should produce penalties . All penalties need to correspond to the terrain the ball is in be it deep grass, bushes, pot bunker and so on. But it needs to be done in a manor not to create a brick wall for rat tails, deep crass, or wild weeds. A collision for deep weeds should no be the same as a tree limb or a stone wall. I've seen overdone collisions.... So be careful what we wish for.

sounds nice, but , more collissionboxes can really impact fps.
so i would prefer just a heavuer percentage penalty..niot sure how that works now.
maybe the builders set it?

Would much rather they work on PG 2018.

Rather work on PG18 vs what?
Courses?
I'd imagine this course was being done anyhow by necessity for the paid TV work.

First PP should fix all Probs with Game Physic then they got my Money in Future. Bad or no Support is not good to catch my Money.
Thanks for buying it anyway Mr Harald! ![]()

After a few rounds on this one, I think it might possibly be the best course we have for the entire game.
Something about the planting, the details, the FPS - It all comes together as a remarkably detailed and complete package.
Very very nicely done.
I was surprised to see you say this Buck. The 3D work is great and the planting is nice, but there's several things that stick out to me that aren't quite top notch for a purchased course.
As mentioned by others there are only 3 pins per green. A real head-scratcher. Can't think of a good reason for so few options.
Why not model some nice looking gorse bushes for these officially released links courses? Come on guys! Some custom foliage please. Make us feel special
Why is there a rough-like texture surrounding so many of the greenside bunkers? Even though these textures play as "fairway" it doesn't match how the course looks IRL based on the Open coverage.
Artifact (DPRoberts calls them "jaggies") on one or more of the billboard grass textures. Noticeable when standing in the tall grass and the grasses are waving back and forth.
The course does play well, I just wouldn't place it in the upper echelon of courses we have in the game.

Interesting - I think it's probably because I've never seen the real course (haven't been watching), don't really care about the pins so much (indifferent mostly) and jaggies didn't seem much different to me than many of the other courses with grasses (they all sort of suck on that aspect).
I do always sort of wonder if things are different (better or worse) perception wise depending upon resolution and viewing distance.
For as much as I gripe about some of the graphics in PG, on my 55" OLED 1080p, the game can look marvelous at times, especially from the 6-8' away I'm sitting.
I used to play PG in 4k on a PC monitor and I honestly enjoy it more at 1080p on a larger screen (performance is better too of course)
Not sure what it was, but unprovoked my uncle agreed about how nice this course was last night.
It just has "something" and it just feels like some polish and detail that for some reason catches my eye.
Like everything - different strokes for different folks! :-)
Also - now that we are talking about it - I'd probably still have to say Crystal Pines is my favorite.
No clue why - but I really really like CP

I would rather see the devs work on PG 2018 than work on collision properties and making the rough more penal. Would like to see a complete game.

Oh. I guess I sort of think the incorrectness of many of the collision things and rough not being penal enough are integral issues and part of what needs fixing.
I agree though - even on those subjects, work on fixing it for PG18

Buck that 55 inch OLED is how I will play when I move full time to the beach and am looking forward to that. I bet Royal Birkdale looks awesome playing that way.
OLED's are totally amazing.
It basically ruins other TV's for you..

There's just no excuse for providing only three pins. If more are planned in the coming update, great, they are welcome. It's not like the greens are so small that there are so few choices. More pins provide more replay value.

Quiet is fine for general rounds but there's nothing like a good audio file for a bit of immersive feeling in the gameplay ... some of the custom sound files for Links03 were fantastic, I miss those when playing JNPG.

I remenber commentators after every each shot in Links2003. That GREATLY added to realism and inmersion... a great deal. Not to mention the statistics and career mode ( sigh,...)

If someone likes ghosting one plays on a tv monitor. There are many disadvantages to playing on a tv monitor vs a pc monitor.
Here is just one of tons of links about why tv monitors are not good for gaming.

In the context of a golf game it is a total non-issue…
Input lag is not a problem for this type of game, overscan can easily be disabled and g/free sync are essentially irrelevant for something like a golf game that moves slow and runs at lower FPS anyhow.
For other types of gaming go ahead and knock yourself out, but since we are here on the golf forum let's keep it in this context and big screen TVs, especially modern ones, are totally awesome for games in this genre.
In regards to ghosting, could you post a link to something that articulates your concerns there?
The article you linked to doesn't have the word ghost in it even once.

I did not see this, I made a separate post about a problem I was having with Royal Birshire but put in additional questions. I would really like some answers to those questions. Even if it is in a PM. And so this is not a total hijack I am really happy for Jordan. What a huge comeback.
