A lot of people use Gimp which would probably work just fine. I haven't used it so I am not 100% sure.

No Keith, I do know there are other programs that can convert to .raw format but not sure which ones.
Jimbo, I uploaded Wilburx64. I know it is a free GIS tool as I have seen on multiple pages but I guess the place that hosted the file doesn't work anymore.

Apparently GIMP doesn't have native support for RAW files, but the following (free) plug-in supports it. I have no experience with either (just used some Google-fu). There are also other free RAW converters out there that don't require use of any art program. Google RAW converter to find them.

I keep getting this wierd effect. I am guessing it is from not having good Lidar data.
Also when I try exporting the elevation data from global mapper, It will not export using the sample spacing set at 1.
I get th error "No compatible and exportable data is available for export within the specified export bounds"
It will however export if I leave the sample spacing to the default, but this is what I get.

the 3d in global mapper looks ok, not great but ok, I am pretty sure it just has to do with the resolution of the terrain in this area. It exports at 279x199 so when I scale and crop it to 2048x2048, it gets pixelated. I will work more on it later

I've probably done 5 LiDAR courses with Globalmapper, all with approximately 1m point samples, different process to Joe's, but recall the same 'no compatible data' error (can't recall the moguls though). For me it was simply when I'd forgotten to triangulate, and doing that fixed it. I just can't recall the software vividly enough to suggest what your problem is but will have a look at work later if you want.
Nice tuts Joe, you come across well. Same accent as Mr Ed when you say "Wilbur'.
