Hey Joe,

Thanks for the tuts. I can already imagine the wealth of real courses we will see in the future with Course Forge. Can anyone suggest a resource for New York State Lidar and what I should be looking for.

Thanks

Earthexplorer.usgs.gov covers a small (like 5-10%) part of New York State - you might be lucky. Under Data Sets and LiDAR, toggle the map coverage button to see.

Thanks Tim,

Hope this appears. But below is what I get when I import a las file into global mapper and triangulate/grid as per the tutorials.
Any suggestions on what may be occurring.

First view the point cloud before gridding and see if there are noisy points in the air. That'll determine if your data source is noisy or not.

Your elevation values even in the non-spikey areas look too scaled as well - maybe vertical units set incorrectly?

I don't know much about the data you're getting from earth explorer so I can't help much there but yes it does looks like the elevations are off. Make sure you only have GROUND checked when importing the lidar because in my case I will get trees, buildings and everything else in my point cloud and when gridding can look pretty bad. This looks like the case that the elevations are just off because it wasn't imported properly. You could very well be importing feet instead of meter and you might need to read the text or xml file if this earth explorer even gives you one to get the correct info to import. I just know my way from doing it many times and others have helped me to, my lidar is easy to do it's all the other ones out there I have no clue about.

Thanks guys,
Sorted the 3D viewer had a exaggeration variate on it.
Found some great data around a certain famous course in NY and have got the process down to about 10min a course. The resolution with Lidar is god smackingly good and the coverage with earth explorer is fairly substantial.

I'm just going to import a heap of courses in and decide where to start.

Erin Hills anybody?

Considering how long I have looked for ways to import accurate real world data it was a revelation for me to work with lidar. Just wish we had more of it in Oz.

Looks like Joe is using Unity 4, so not everything translates 1:1 with U5.  The Global Mapper program does cost $449.

£285, not sure I want to spend that sort of money, hopefully there is another way but I expect Global Mapper makes it easier.

To all those not wanting to buy Global Mapper I expect members that own it to share the unity imports. Given how easy it is I for one will take requests for courses provided there is Lidar available. I can see a resource down the track where a large list of imported courses will exist for all to use.

I would have no problem paying £5 - £10 for someone who has Global Mapper to do it for me, that's of course if and when we get CF, I believe the 1st one to beta test it as had it about 18 months.

I use GM at a company I do contract work for--I wouldn't up that usage and definitely wouldn't abuse that courtesy by charging.
